What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

This is a term appointment for which all qualified applicants with or without Federal status may apply and be considered. Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition.

Salary: $73,375 (Step 01) to $95,388 (Step 10);
NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Responsibilities
As an Ecologist within the Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
Plans and conducts studies and investigations concerning biological and physical processes that affect ecology, fishery, and/or wildlife resources. The areas of study specifically include: aquatic ecology, population genomics, quantitative ecology, and ecodrought.
Carries out investigations to evaluate current programs, recommend changes, eliminate or improve operations and program plans.
Writes comprehensive reports and/or manuscripts on study findings and recommendations.
Presents scientific findings on studies and investigations.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Work is performed in an office, laboratory, hatchery, and in the field. Office work is mostly sedentary, with lengthy periods of time spent working on computer terminals. Fieldwork and laboratory work is physically active and includes walking, bending, climbing, lifting, and carrying equipment in various weather conditions. Some travel to field sites is required, where the employee may be exposed to inclement weather, biting insects, and other natural hazards such as mountainous terrain, storms and dangerous wildlife.

Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. If you are qualifying based on specialized experience, in addition to the basic education requirements listed in the link above, you must meet the requirements listed below:

One year of appropriate specialized experience that is in ecology, biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled.

Examples of GS-11 level work may include: 1) design, development and conduct of protocols to analyze spatial and temporal data; 2) conduct of sampling, experimental design, statistical analyses and biometrics relative to wetlands ecology; 3) independent planning and conduct of comprehensive biological studies/investigations and requests for proposals; 4) modifying and adapting standard biological techniques and procedures; 5) serving as a technical resource on biological issues; 6) design and management of projects, studies to provide an understanding of the effects of environmental perturbations in study areas.
