Full Job Description
Assumes responsibility for performance of routine, standardized biological and/or biochemical test procedures on blood, urine, tissues, body fluids and other specimen sources that help physicians in the diagnosis and clinical management of patients. Assumes responsibility for obtaining specimens from a variety of patients by venipuncture, heel, finger sticks or swab using an assortment of collection tubes or containers. Assumes responsibility for actively contributing to the department's productive and cost effectiveness. Responsible for identification and reporting of employee or patient safety issues and recognizing results or problems that require referral to the Laboratory Manager or designee. Assumes responsibility for specimen collection and testing systems considering the age-specific and physical needs of the patient. Responsible for performing major scheduled maintenance on analyzers and equipment, quality control testing and remedial actions. Documents records according to policy. Responsible for teaching students enrolled in Med Tech/Phlebotomy programs and training new staff. Maintains competency and education to perform duties as assigned.
a.) Understands and demonstrates age specific treatment of patients during performance of procedures and communication.
b.) Respects patient rights (privacy, dignity, confidentiality); complies with HIPAA regulations; ensures accurate patient identity by requiring two patient identifiers, establishing patient ID and labeling specimens in front of the patient.
c.)Demonstrates respect and courtesy when communicating and assisting patients/visitors; behaves in a professional manner.
d.) Performs patient care in an accurate and timely manner; outpatient wait times are kept to a minimum; testing is reported within acceptable time frames; specimen labeling policies are followed.
e.) Maintains accuracy of patient records; files requisitions and reports correctly; obtains clarification of incomplete orders per policy; reviews records for accuracy and missed tests.
a.) Shows attention to detail, accuracy, and thoroughness; follows through on projects initials and dates per protocol; testing is performed in accordance with established policy and procedure.
b.)Demonstrates attention to resource consumption; works efficiently and cost effectively; reports potential outdating and low inventory items in a timely manner; maintains equipment.
c.) Prioritizes and completes work assignments within allotted time; work is not left for next shift; follows through with work and resolution of problems.
d.)Maintains quality standards defined within job functions and departmental quality initiatives; questionable results are not released until adequate resolution is obtained.
e.) Quality control testing is performed and recorded per policy and procedure; results are not released until QC results are within acceptable range; remedial documentation is performed and recorded in a timely manner.

c.)Follows established confidentiality procedures (verbal, written, and electronic).
d.)Critical Value results are reported and notification made within acceptable time frame in accordance with procedure.
e.)Reads email and performs Hand-Off communication when coming on duty; email is checked periodically and when going off duty.

Baccalaureate degree and/or ASCP registry or equivalent. Completion of formal training from accredited school of clinical laboratory medicine. Must meet CAP Gen.53625 Technical Consultant or GEN.53600 General Supervisor qualifications. Minimum of one year experience comparable to those performed in this laboratory. Must have BLS upon hire and maintain throughout employment.
