Chaplain-Interns participate in an accredited Clinical Pastoral Education program in pastoral care and counseling while serving as chaplains at Frederick Regional Health System. The CPE program is 15 weeks. The focus and emphasis of the program is clinical training in pastoral care and counseling with a focus of learning high-end listening skills.

First and foremost Chaplains are skilled listeners. They walk with persons and help them discuss the meaning of their experiences. Through pastoral ministry persons are helped to use their values, faith, and beliefs for health, wholeness, and healing. Chaplains help those to whom they minister draw upon their faith traditions. The emphasis of the program is to develop and enhance the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to appropriately assess spiritual/emotional distress and provide appropriate pastoral care and counseling.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required

  • Master of Divinity or equivalent educational is preferred;
  • Ecclesiastical endorsement preferred;
  • Willing to provide pastoral care and counseling that is non-denominational/ecumenical to patients, their families, staff, and volunteers.
