This position supports our medical professional line of business. Depending upon qualifications of the selected candidate, we may fill this position at a higher or lower level. This position supports our Northeast Region and should be based in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia or Massachusetts.
Summary:
The Underwriting Supervisor is a leadership position that works side-by-side with the Regional VP of Underwriting to ensure exceptional results. The position manages a team of Underwriting staff, seasoned to entry level, providing leadership, direction, performance coaching and development to the team in all technical, operational and performance aspects. The Underwriting Supervisor is responsible for supervision of the Underwriting staff while also directly handling underwriter responsibilities for specific accounts/territories as assigned. The Supervisor is responsible for providing quality and efficient service, handling elevated customer inquiries, troubleshooting and training.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
60% Supervision of Underwriting team and profitability of book of business; evaluate new and renewal business to ensure risk quality.

Recruits and supervises underwriting staff.

Monitors authority levels for underwriting staff.

Guides, mentors and coaches staff on assigned accounts.

Provides training to staff and identifies staff development opportunities.

Participates in policyholder meetings for new and renewal business.

Provides technical direction and guidance to underwriting staff on accounts.

Monitors workflows, processes, and procedures for continuous improvement.

Performs account coordination activities with other departments when needed.

Ensure team member performance follows industry standards and internal requirements.

Forms and develops new relationships as well as maintains and strengthens existing relationships with agents operating in designated region.
20% Underwriting Compliance

May perform internal quality control audits and manages staff for internal and external audits.

Coordinates or participates in file reviews and preparation for reinsurance, state, and internal audits.

Ensures compliance with individual state requirements and policies and procedures.
10% Policy Rates, Revisions and Guidelines

Participates in work groups on policy forms and filings reviews.
10% Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform special projects as directed by management
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Business or related field, with 5 years of experience in professional liability underwriting, or Associates degree with 9 years’ experience in professional liability underwriting

Previous experience in a lead or mentor role

Working knowledge of the insurance industry

Must be available to travel up to 20% of the time.

Strong management, written and verbal communication and problem-solving skills.

Must have or be working toward CPCU, RPLU or other relative insurance designations.

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite

Position Salary Range
$83,869.00 - $138,397.00
The salary range displayed represents the entirety of the pay grade for this position. Most candidates will start in the bottom half of the range. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have, your location and comparison to other team members already in this role.
