The Director, Safety & Environmental Services (DSES) is a senior level position responsible for creation and oversight of safety and environmental programs for all Hornblower Group companies (Hornblower Cruises, Alcatraz Cruises, Niagara Cruises, Statue Cruises, and Hornblower New York). The DSES ensures full implementation of the company IIPP, OSHA and USCG regulations, and internal Q2 programs. The emphasis is on working with the individual ports to develop and evangelize a safety-first culture, including training to achieve desired objectives and mitigate risks.
Position specific responsibilities:
Responsible for developing and maintaining written safety, health, and environmental services programs
Oversee implementation of company-wide Safety Management System
Team with General Managers to develop port-specific safety and environmental compliance plans by working closely with local safety committee and marine operations team
Reinforce safety, health, and environmental programs through the exchange of best practices and frequent presence at all Hornblower ports and vessels
Execute safety and environmental inspections, documenting corrective and preventative actions
Lead internal incident investigations and disseminate corrective actions and lessons learned
Lead safety meetings and communicate relevant safety trends, root causes, corrective actions, preventative actions
Understand and integrate all OSHA, USCG, and shipyard regulations to ensure company meets or exceeds compliance standards
Develop an effective loss control system
Oversee reporting of all incidents (crew, passenger, property), working with Human Resources, insurance carriers and claims administrators
Work with Human Resources to ensure proper compensation, coordination of benefits (WC, Jones Act, Disability, FML), and return to work management
Work with Finance, Human Resources and insurance companies to drive timely closure of claims to best total solution while treating all involved with fairness and respect
Oversee and ensure adequate safety, health, and environmental training of all crew, working with corporate and local training managers
Follow company sustainability practices to ensure minimum impact on the environment
At least 7 years’ experience in a maritime or transportation safety position with a minimum of 3 years as a senior manager
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent work experience) in safety, maritime engineering, or a similar field
Certified Safety Professional
Computer expertise, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
