Job Purpose

The Health Promotion and Marketing Specialist is responsible for writing and designing high quality promotional and marketing materials for the Cambridge Public Health Department. The Marketing Specialist also manages the department's social media accounts and is an active contributor to the department's website. A member of the Chief Public Health Officer's leadership team, the Marketing Specialist co-leads the Marketing and Communication priority area of the department's strategic plan, and participates in developing and implementing departmental and programmatic communication plans and projects.


Produce high quality written materials and content for digital and print media, including websites, social media platforms, brochures, posters, flyers, and email blasts.

Design departmental and program marketing materials, including flyers, brochures, posters, web and social media graphics, email templates, and other related collateral. Ensure all materials adhere to the department's brand and identity standards.

Manage all phases of creative development and production of marketing materials, including overseeing work of consultants, maintaining relationships with multiple contractors and vendors, coordinating meetings between staff and consultants, and overseeing project timelines and budgets.

Provide support for program social marketing plan/campaign development. May include working with consultants on formative research (surveys, focus groups), audience segmentation and profiling, and message development.

Manage the CPHD Twitter account and other social media platforms, with support from the Public Information Officer.

Update and maintain the CPHD website in collaboration with program staff and the PIO, through creating and posting content, designing graphics, and participating in site improvement projects.

Lead the department's Social Media and Website Committee and other work groups, as needed.

In collaboration with program staff, develop displays and social media messages for selected health observances and National Public Health Week.

Serve as a member of the department's Media Team, including acting as a back-up media liaison for the Public Information Officer.

Serve as a member of the department's Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) Leadership Council; includes co-leading Priority Area 2 (Marketing & Communication) of the department's Strategic Plan.

With the Public Information Officer, develop and implement departmental communication plans, systems, and projects that help achieve the department's marketing and communication goals.

With the Public Information Officer build communication and social marketing and design capacity within the department.

Perform other related duties as assigned or directed.


Education/Training: Bachelor's degree required; master's degree in health communication, marketing, communication, or public health preferred.

Work Experience: 3 years' experience preferred

Physical Skills: Normal-professional position.

Mental Skills: Analytical skills and the ability to translate complex data into usable information. Fully developed oral and written communication skills.

Working Conditions and Physical Environment: Normal-office environment. Travel to various sites throughout system required.

Competencies and skills

Excellent writing and editing skills, with demonstrated ability to create content for a variety of communication channels (e.g., website, social media, publications, flyers, PSAs).

Demonstrated graphic design and layout skills. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud, especially InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator a plus.

Strong organization and project management skills with the ability to multitask.

Experience with social media platforms, including Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook. Knowledge of social media analytics and management tools a plus.

Strong communicator who can interact with staff at all management levels and with a variety of external partners and customers.

Knowledge of communication planning and social marketing/corporate marketing principles a plus.

Willingness to learn website content management systems (currently CMS; likely moving to Wordpress).

Basic knowledge of photography, videography a plus.
