Experience and Education Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Science, Health Care Administration, or related field. Certification as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) preferred. CLS (NCA), MLT or equivalent certifications or experience will also be considered. Master's degree preferred.
Must have five (5) years experience in first-line or mid-level management or supervision with minimum of three (3) years supervisory experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
Job Duties The Clinical Laboratory Services (CLS) Manager, Ancillary Services is to oversee the Pre-Analytical processes, i.e. specimen collections and specimen management, for the CLS-wide system, covering all associated hospitals and clinics. The Manager is accountable for the direct management of Laboratory Ancillary Services to provide high quality, accurate and timely test results in a cost-efficient manner.
This position is responsible for hiring, developing, motivating counseling, overseeing and training, including cross-training, & ensuring competency of Laboratory Ancillary Services employees in all shifts at all facilities; holding staff accountable for maintaining and enforcing high, fair and consistent standards of performance; prioritizing assignments & making staffing adjustments in accordance with budgetary guidelines; monitoring the section operating & capital budgets; maintaining the productivity goals of the section.
Continually seek innovative ways to improve quality and efficiency, involving staff in these efforts through the mentoring of staff in team development skills and facilitating team understanding of Continuous Quality Improvement and productivity measurement.
Collaborate with UT Southwestern Ambulatory & Marketing management to provide excellent customer service to outreach clients and increase market share.
Oversees an effective Laboratory Ancillary Services Quality Improvement program, in conformance with the Clinical Laboratory Services and UTSW University Hospitals (UH) Quality Programs; assists in the development and implementation of department goals & objectives; maintaining accreditations including, but not limited, with College of American Pathologists (CAP), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), The Joint Commission (TJC), licensing for Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) for patient care.
Ensures laboratory is compliant with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Demonstrates proficient use of the Laboratory Information System as well as knowledge regarding specimen requirements, referral testing procedures, research protocols, and familiarity with the standard billing practices.
Prepares and/or participates in the development of the department budget in conjunction with established goals and objectives. Ensures budgetary goals are met on an annual basis.
Responsible for promoting effective communication and teamwork with all laboratory and hospital staff among the UTSW University Hospitals. Serves as a resource and communication liaison by facilitating timely and accurate dissemination of information to the laboratory staff.
