The Challenge

Our microbial product development team is looking for a microbial physiologist to assist in the development and improvement of innovative nutritional products. The applicant will design and execute fermentation optimization projects and physiological analysis of microbial strains in support of strain development efforts at the DSM Biotechnology Center.

The Position

This person will have experience in microbial physiology to lead projects advancing bench-scale and microtiter-plate based fermentations in the company. The Microbial Physiology team at DSM is essential for identifying and further understanding the cellular metabolism and mechanisms for improved performance in a variety of industrial micro-organisms, including heterotrophic algae. The position calls for an individual with experience in the analysis of microbial cells using measurements of intracellular metabolites, enzyme assays and metabolic pathway fluxes. A strong background in microbiology, microbial physiology, and cellular metabolism is required.

The applicant will be part of a team tasked with the development and improvement of commercial microbial products within a collaborative, fast-paced environment. (S)he will act as a liaison and a microbial physiology lead between various departments (molecular, strain development, fermentation and analytical chemistry groups) to develop organisms that deliver target performance in fermenter systems. The position will require at least 60% hands-on work at the bench. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Ideal

PhD, MS or equivalent in microbiology, microbial cell physiology, biochemistry, microbial culturing, fermentation or related field
A minimum of 3 years (5+ years preferred) industrial or academic experience involving the characterization of structural features and metabolic states of bacteria, fungi or yeast to improve cellular metabolism.
Strong understanding of the connection between microbial physiology, and process performance
Experience required with analyzing microbial cells using measurements of intracellular components (-omics approaches) and operating small-scale fermentation systems
Familiarity with analytical chemistry/assay methods, automation systems, and LIMS
Strong data analysis skills, including the use of statistics (JMP or similar)
Team player, able to work with multi-disciplinary and multi-national teams
Highly innovative scientist with a drive to create and translate new ideas into practical advances
Excellent communication skills
Motivated self-starter with good organizational skills and the ability to multitask
Experience managing technical staff and working on multiple simultaneous programs
