Founded in 1985, the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) is committed to helping athletes optimize their health and performance through research and education in hydration and nutrition science. As a part of GSSI, the incumbent of this Senior Scientist role will be responsible for representing GSSI and the PepsiCo Global R&D teams with high standards and in accordance with ethical guidelines for human research and conduct, while also
Working with the Senior Principal Scientist to develop and execute the laboratory-based research program at GSSI’s research hub in Barrington, IL
Developing protocols for human clinical trials addressing questions related to hydration, exercise physiology, and sports nutrition
Leading and/or assisting colleagues in the day-to-day execution of research projects including subject recruiting, screening, scheduling as well as data collection, management, statistical analysis, and writing of internal reports and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication
Collaborating across the wider GSSI team (US and Internationally-based colleagues) on research, innovation, service, and education initiatives
Masters required, Ph.D. preferred in Exercise Physiology/Kinesiology/Sports Nutrition or related discipline with experience in laboratory research. We would consider a recent Ph.D. graduate that completed a human research-based Ph.D. program within any of the above fields of study
Demonstrable knowledge in the areas of exercise physiology, sports nutrition, hydration, and/or metabolism and application in elite sport
Three or more years of experience conducting human research (this could include work completed as part of Ph.D. program)
Publishing record with experience producing first authored peer-reviewed research highly preferred
Demonstrable experience with sport-related data handling and interpretation. An excellent understanding of statistics relating to exercise science highly preferred
Experience performing exercise stress tests (including ECG interpretation skills) and VO2max tests highly preferred
Must have a pro-active work style, able to multitask, and be flexible to work in a high-performance and ever-changing environment
Self-starter with good interpersonal communication skills and ability to work with various personalities and work styles
Project management/business management experience preferred
Flexibility and willingness for occasional domestic travel (approximately 5-10%) to attend scientific conferences and visit/collaborate with colleagues at GSSI satellite laboratories and for other GSSI or PepsiCo offsite meetings
Flexibility and willingness to work during non-traditional hours (e.g., early morning) as needed depending upon research protocol (approximately 15-20%)
