Each year, we provide over 90,000 therapy sessions and educate over 700 graduate students to meet the emerging behavioral health needs of our communities. What You Do - THE ROLE:
The big goal of the Controller is to design and operate an efficient, effective finance function to ensure sound use of financial resources. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is responsible for the coordination and oversight of the finances of the Institute including revenue, expenditures, payroll, budgets, audits, cash management, reporting, and financial analyses. The Controller will be accountable for designing and implementing strong internal controls, sound policies and procedures, and robust financial reporting. They will drive financial analyses in collaboration with the CFO and serve as a thought partner to envision new ways of working. PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Controller role is both operational and strategic, managing a solid finance function that enables efficient and effective programs.
- Serve as thought partner to the CFO in leading the finance function of the organization, modernizing the department, and developing tools
- Oversee all finance transactions including payroll, payables, receivables, and general journal entries, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
- Develop and implement strong internal controls over transactions to guard against the risk of errors, omission, and fraud including collaboration with the billing department
- Compose and maintain financial policies and procedures that protect the organization’s assets, ensure compliance, and establish consistent practices across the organization
- Act as lead user of the accounting and reporting system, including upgrades or transitions
- Lead the annual external audit and other state and federal tax reporting requirements to include the 990 and 5500s, ensuring compliance and clean reporting
- Serve as liaison to Northwestern University’s finance department
- Contribute to the development of grant accounting and compliance policies/procedures as the organization seeks new sources of federal funding
- Supervise the Staff Accountant, overseeing their performance and professional development
Strategic & Analytic
Knowledge and Skills:
- Monitor the organization’s cash and investments position and develop forecasting tools
- Develop the Institute’s budget with the CFO, in conjunction with the Directors of programs from the beginning planning sessions through final approval of the Board of Directors
- Prepare schedules, reports, and analytical tools that reveal the economic drivers of activities and promote transparency of financial performance
- Partner with others to enable sound decision making in areas such as compensation models, expense control, and growth projections
- Proactively strategize with the Revenue Cycle Manager (and the Revenue Cycle Management Team) to maximize reimbursements, analyze payor mix, and manage receivables
- Participate in special projects and perform duties as assigned
- Demonstrate an ongoing investment in professional development and in keeping updated on technical knowledge and skills relating to finance and accounting.
Minimum Hiring Specifications:
- General knowledge of accounting and payroll systems, preference for experience with Great Plains, BI360, and/or Paylocity
- Able to deliver effective results, meet tight deadlines and targets
- Strong attention to detail
- Communication skills to include interpersonal, teamwork, and collaboration skills.
- Problem solving and analytical skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills; customer service oriented
- Previous experience in a healthcare setting preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or related field
- 5-7 years of finance or accounting experience
- Preferred previous management experience
