Full Job Description
The Battery Management System (BMS) Technical Specialist works within the Energy Storage Systems team to support and provide leadership for the development of battery management systems for the family of next-generation xEV Stellantis powertrains. The ideal candidate must be a strong team player, self-motivated, and willing to work in a fast-paced environment. The candidate will be involved in multiple activities related to modeling, testing, analysis, and hardware/software development of xEV batteries. The candidate will lead and oversee battery state estimation application software development activities using model-based embedded software products. The candidate will plan cell testing and modeling activities that support BMS development and testing through the development cycle. The candidate will perform research and development activities through any external collaborations to facilitate technology growth and expertise in BMS areas such as battery state estimation, cell balancing, cell/pack modeling, xEV energy storage systems, and advanced model-based software design. The candidate will interface with external suppliers and partners to support joint BMS development activities. The Specialist will work with other team members and inter-disciplinary teams to develop quality automotive battery systems and software throughout the product life cycle.
Job responsibilities include but not limited to:
Lead and provide roadmap for Stellantis battery state estimation functions including State-of-Charge (SOC), State-of-Power (SOP), and State-of-Health (SOH); collectively known as SOX
Development BMS application software and algorithms using MATLAB Simulink model-based software design and implementation on embedded controllers
Oversee SOX specific cell/battery characterization test plans and cell parameterization across different cell types and multiple vehicle programs
Interface with supplier/Stellantis cell/battery test labs and battery specialists
Design experiments to study factors that influence battery cell/pack performance
Support development of Simulink compatible cell/battery models (voltage and thermal responses) for use in BMS validation in Model-in-Loop (MIL) software simulation, and deployment on high voltage cell simulation systems in a Hardware-in-Loop (HIL) test setting
Guide testing and validation of battery state estimation algorithms (SOC, SOH, SOP, charging, balancing) at MIL, HIL, pack, and vehicle validation levels
Support Stellantis battery/lab/software testing processes and create technical design description documents
Constructively contribute to research and development activities related to energy storage systems and BMS software development for automotive applications
Other areas of expertise needed to support work products include: general knowledge of hybrid battery and hybrid vehicle/powertrain operation, expert level knowledge of MATLAB scripting and MATLAB Simulink/Stateflow

Basic Qualifications:
Masters of Applied Science in Electrical/Control/Software Engineering or related discipline from an ABET accredited university with battery experience
Expert level knowledge of model-based software design with a minimum of 8 years of Matlab Simulink
A minimum of 4 years of experience with battery and energy storage technologies experience
Knowledgeable in Lithium ion cell modeling methods including equivalent circuit modeling and electrochemical based methods
Understanding of battery/cell aging phenomena and their modeling approaches
Research and development experience to creatively support innovation projects and university research collaborations
Ability to be effective in a Fast-paced development environment and react to changes
Willing to work extended hours occasionally as required to meet project deadlines
Excellent verbal and written communication skills Excellent problem solving and organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in Electrical/Control/Software Engineering or related discipline from an ABET accredited university
Expertise in scripting tools (Python, MATLAB, etc) for statistical analysis, signal processing, simulations, regression/optimization based parameter fitting, modeling, machine learning, and matrix computations
Expert level knowledge in Lithium ion cell modeling methods including equivalent circuit modeling, electrochemical based methods, and empirical approaches Recognized expert in battery state estimation including state-of-charge (SOC), state-of-health (SOH), and state-of-power (SOP)
Prior experience with BMS software development and control algorithms
A minimum of 6 years prior experience with BMS and electrified powertrains Prior work with battery pack/cell simulator systems based on either dSpace or ETAS
Knowledgeable in high voltage battery system mechatronics
Ability to lead small engineering and technical teams for development/research projects
Prior successful experience developing training materials and performing training/teaching
Track record of innovative and successful research and development experience spanning a minimum of 8 years
