We are seeking an experienced technical manager to head the Industrial Product Metallurgy team committed to engineering safe, reliable products to our customers while growing and enhancing our portfolio of solutions serving the Industrial market. This individual is expected to have a broad technical engineering knowledge base with a focus on metallurgical products and a proven track record of leading teams to impactful results. This individual will influence the strategy for product lifecycles and be responsible for the optimization and enhancement of alloy products, continue building foundational knowledge in processing-structure-property relationships, and maintain the company as a leader in innovative and quality metallurgical related solutions.
MANAGER - PRODUCT METALLURGY, INDUSTRIAL MARKET
Lead a team of metallurgists and technicians to engineer products that reliably meet the technical specifications of our customers, enabling safe and unfailing performance in application
Work closely with the commercial team to surface customer unmet needs and solve issues related to existing products.
Apply business and management expertise to achieve financial and operational objectives within or across areas or departments.
Provide leadership to technical staff providing services related to contract review including understanding / interpreting specifications and customer requirements, developing manufacturing routings and processes, problem solving, quality improvement, disposition of referred, non-standard and discrepant material, technical assistance to customers, and other technical support as required.
Work to develop knowledge and skills in the areas of strategy/plan development and alignment as well as leadership of broad quality improvement initiatives.
Effectively manage the portfolio of projects related to product capability optimization, improvements, and enhancements, including maintaining a culture of accountability, effectively allocating resources, and supporting project managers with risk mitigation.
Collaborate with other leaders and groups in the enterprise to solve problems and execute projects, effectively leveraging expertise to maximize impact of resources, and ensure access to essential capabilities and equipment necessary for project success.
Create a culture of accountability, engagement, and safety based on the Carpenter Core Values. Drive employee growth and development with coaching and motivational management.
Build and maintain the Industrial Product Metallurgy team through active recruitment, succession planning, employee development plans, identification of expertise gaps, and employee education and training.
Four year college degree in Material Science and Engineering or related field. Ability to travel 15-25%.
Ten or more years of experience in a technical or R&D staff position, with experience managing a staff strongly preferred.
Portfolio management skills are essential with demonstrated drive and passion towards project outcomes. Must be able to set clear priorities, commit to achieving deliverables, and deliver on commitments on time with above-the-line accountability.
Must have strong overall business acumen including understanding of financial aspects of the business, with the ability to distill critical information for decision making and executive presentations. Ability to execute business plans and achieve goals.
Knowledge of statistical analysis methodology and application. Ability to recognize, communicate, measure, and implement actions to mitigate technical risks.
Open and candid communications style with willingness to speak out and encourage dissent prior to final decision making.
Proven capability to build motivated and effective teams that drive toward results which solve customer problems. Experience in coaching and developing personnel to grow into leaders for the organization.
Ability to work in a production oriented environment.
Metallurgical knowledge and experience with specialty steels and nickel alloys. Emphasis on alloy steels, stainless steels, and/or superalloys is applicable and preferred.
Industry experience with Industrial applications is preferred. Experience in other markets including defense, energy, automotive, aerospace, medical is applicable.
Working knowledge of quality systems and experience with problem solving, both for internal improvement and for external customer support preferred.
Strong experience in working cross-functionally both within an organization and outside using strong interpersonal skills to secure expertise, resources, and momentum necessary to advance major programs.
