The Performing Arts Department (PAD) at Washington University in St. Louis is seeking a full-time Costume Shop Supervisor. This position oversees the costume shop and stock, supervising and informally teaching 6-10 work-study students, ensuring the timely execution of all costume designs for four drama productions and three dance concerts.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Teach students how to create costumes through the interpretation of designer sketches by employing pattern making, draping, garment construction, fabric dyeing, fitting techniques, and alterations. Locate and pull costumes from storage and other theaters in St. Louis. Shop locally or purchase online as needed. Oversee and assist in execution of all designs and other details for each actor.

Supervise students with maintenance of the costume shop and storage. Perform or attend all fittings and take notes.

Create and maintain an organizational system for all productions with the design, technical, and budget information. Work with budgets for each show and aspire to produce work that is both economical and quality driven. Set up measurement schedules and take measurements for all actors. Arrange fittings.

Supervise students with setting up the costume racks for each show. Train costume crews from the Introduction to Theater Production course for each production. Maintain costume storage. Assist with the budget for costume shop expenditures. Set up students’ schedules and approve their timesheets every two weeks. Attend production meetings for some but not all productions. Provide rehearsal costumes. Attend dress rehearsals as needed. Attend most strikes upon show ending.

Working Conditions
The costume shop supervisor occasionally dyes or sprays costumes with the use of a ventilated hood, proper masks, and gloves. Regularly lifts/carries costumes-potentially weighing up to 50lbs-to and from off-site locations. A company van can be used requiring a Class E driver’s license or personal car.
Preferred Qualifications

Master of Arts or Master of Fine Arts in Costume Design and/or Technology.

One year of costume shop management experience.

Expert-level machine and hand sewing, pattern drafting, draping, dyeing.

Willingness to work closely with others and maintain a positive work environment, ability to multitask, create organized paperwork.

Manage and instruct students of varying skill levels.

Willing and able to collaborate with designers.

Bachelor's degree and three years of professional costume construction experience; Or equivalent education and experience.

Valid Missouri Class E or Illinois Class D Driver's license.

Good driving record.

$23.37 - $36.19 / Hourly
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
