Position Summary and ResponsibilitiesVassar College announces an open position for a Systems Administrator, supporting the Computer Science (CS) Department and the Center for Collaborative Approaches to Science (CCAS). Allocation of effort is ±75% to the CS Department and ±25% to CCAS. This position reports to the CS Department Chair.
Responsibilities: (to both CS and CCAS, unless otherwise indicated)
Maintain Linux server operating systems on multiple hardware platforms.
Maintain client operating systems for faculty and students including Linux, Windows, and Mac OSX.
Maintain and customize servers, applications, and end-user devices, including associated server and network infrastructure.
Document systems and services, tune and configure applications, ensure system performance with system monitoring and analysis tools.
Create and maintain documentation on systems availability, access, and usage for users.
Ensure systems security including monitoring and control procedures, establishing and testing disaster recovery policies, and overseeing the operation of departmental backup systems.
Solve technical problems while working under minimal supervision.
Identify need for and implementation of updates, patches and fixes and system enhancements, log monitoring, and system hardening.
Provide user support to faculty and students including appropriate training and classroom lectures to new users on systems and policies.
Coordinate faculty expectations and needs with existing and prospective computing resources.
Meet regularly with the Computing and Information Services (CIS) Network and Systems Director and participate in Network and Systems team meetings to ensure alignment with CIS college-wide standards and approaches
Meet CS financial requirements by submitting information for budgets, managing expenses, and creating budget projections based on academic course hardware and software needs.
Train and supervise the CS department intern.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in IT-related field preferred; Associate's degree required. A minimum of five years' of experience in systems administration, preferably some for an academic department, including an extensive, current working knowledge of Ubuntu and Debian GNU/Linux on a broad range of hardware platforms. Superior troubleshooting skills are required. Experience with the following: system automation using shell scripts and other scripting languages; installation, maintenance and support of open source and proprietary software; backups, file sharing over multiple protocols, virtualization, system monitoring, multiple web services and protocols, and multi-user remote access; standard internet protocols, firewall configuration, troubleshooting, and productivity tools; HPC clusters, grid computing, and parallel and distributed software tools. Experience supporting programming languages and IDEs, dropboxes for electronic submission of student work, and version control. Must be able to work efficiently and cooperatively with faculty and students in a multitasking, interrupt-driven environment. Strong interpersonal skills are required. Must be willing to provide 24x7 support.
