Tasks
ABB is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer who provides technical support related services towards the development and manufacture of dry type current and voltage transformers with ratings ranging from 600V to 35kV. This includes reviewing products and processes to improve safety, estimate production costs and recommending design changes to simplify production processes, reduce costs, improve product quality, and meet special customer requirements.

Under limited direction, perform a variety of complex engineering assignments requiring in-depth knowledge of mechanical / industrial engineering as it pertains to the design and manufacture of transformers. In addition must be well versed in related engineering disciplines to support overall facility goals, such as safety, quality enhancements and cost reductions. Assignments typically require direct engagement with manufacturing processes, equipment, and people. Proactively seeks and implements initiatives to improve operations and increase customer satisfaction.
Typical duties/responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Direct hands on support of manufacturing area. Support includes resolving manufacturing issues, training manufacturing associates, creating training materials, etc. Manufacturing processes include: general assembly, wire winding, thermoplastic molding, casting, brazing, sheet metal forming, and high voltage testing.
  • Ensure manufacturing area is equipped with the tools and fixtures needed to safely produce quality products. This includes designing, procuring and maintaining fixtures and tooling. Provide safe and efficient material handling and storage solutions for assigned area. This includes design and specification of unit packaging.
  • Work directly with manufacturing associates to fully understand internal manufacturing processes to ensure employee safety, improve quality, and reduce lead times and costs. Create, review and maintain production documentation such as routings, work instructions, risk assessments, etc.
  • Support manufacturing supervision in in all continuous improvement programs such as 6S, lean manufacturing, scrap reduction, and productivity increases.
  • Assess capacity and capability needs of assigned areas and propose and implement process changes and/or create and execute capital equipment acquisition to meet these needs.
  • Support the design and launch of new products by actively participating in design reviews, offering feedback to design engineers to improve product manufacturability, developing routings and work instructions, and providing labor cost estimates.
  • Work directly with sales, product management, and quality, and design to address customer concerns and identify potential product improvements.
  • Offer optimized design suggestions for components and subassemblies such as brackets, cores, winding assemblies and various other components that result in safety, quality, or cost improvements.
  • Act as principal investigator or lead a cross functional team investigating problems, including field failures, internal testing failures, manufacturing issues, and customer complaints. Must be capable of developing and carrying out specific plans for determining root cause and implementing corrective action.
Requirements

Basic qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering with 2+ years of experience in an engineering related role.
Preferred qualifications:
  • BS Degree in Mechanical / Industrial / Electrical engineering or technology degree preferred.
  • Previous experience working / supporting an engineering manufacturing production environment.
  • Previous LEAN/ KAIZEN project experience within manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to effectively use the following computer applications: Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, SolidWorks, Autocad.
  • In addition, expertise in PLC programming and/or LabView is a plus.
  • Experience with manufacturing processes with general assembly, wire winding, thermoplastic molding, casting, brazing, sheet metal forming, and high voltage testing.
  • Experience with continuous improvement programs such as 6S, lean manufacturing, scrap reduction, and productivity increases.
  • Work directly with sales, product management, and quality, and design to address customer concerns and identify potential product improvements.
  • Significant English verbal/ written communication skills.
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US. No visa transfers or origination of any kind available for this position.
  • North Carolina Local and/or near local US candidates highly preferred.
