As Manager of the DevOps team at Guardant Health, you will lead, grow and develop a team of DevOps engineers dedicated to the craft of building a world class technology platform to support our cancer care mission. You are passionate about creating an environment where engineers can tackle ambitious goals. You are a strong technologist, with experience designing and building tools, toolchains and solutions that enable high change velocity while maintaining high availability on our platform. You enjoy working with and providing service to product oriented cross-functional teams consisting of engineers, product managers, QA and operations team members. Build and lead highly empowered, responsive, customer-focused and globally distributed teams
Collaborate with your counterparts in Bioinformatics as well as Architects, DevOps Engineers, Engineering Leaders, Product Managers and Engineers across the organization to deliver timely, reliable and performant cloud-based development environments and infrastructure
Ensure the continual functioning of mission critical operations with preventative monitoring
Evolve into a 24x7 support model for engineering environments with a follow-the-sun process for critical issues. Participate in an on-call schedule. Weekend and after hours work as needed
Deliver on day-to-day support expectations with a tactical focus, while also delivering on a strategic and transformative roadmap driving stability, reliability and productivity
Troubleshoot a wide variety of infrastructure and application issues with robust root-cause analysis
Meet organization SLA's and make data-driven decisions
Develop and maintain your team’s roadmap to utilize fully automated, self-service, highly scalable, cost-efficient, observable, auditable and reliable infrastructure. Continuously align it to the technology roadmap
Partner closely with Development, Security, Quality Assurance, Operations and Product teams to achieve high priority security, privacy, compliance, reliability and business-continuity objectives on our overall roadmap
Negotiate with and manage vendors to procure cost effective and reliable solutions with appropriate SLAs
Lead the team and participate in key technical, design, and product discussions of various initiatives. Represent your team with leaders across different parts of our organization
Provide technical guidance and support via engineering design reviews to teams planning and implementing large migrations, deployment of service-oriented architecture, broad architectural shifts, and capacity growth
Continuously improve efficacy, quality and velocity of team’s deliverables using goal setting, prioritization, metrics, quarterly and annual planning, . Manage, measure and communicate the team's progress toward goals.
Develop and coach team members, ensuring a high level of performance and professional growth.
As hiring manager, in collaboration with other technology leaders, define and maintain the interview process for your team. Partner closely with the recruiting team on sourcing strategies, interviewing, closing and onboarding.
7+ years of experience in supporting software development and operations via methods like automated deployments, infrastructure as code, etc. in a public cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.)
5+ years’ experience managing DevOps & Reliability engineers, preferably in a highly- regulated environment, such as biotech or healthcare
Demonstrable understanding of common architectural patterns and frameworks. We are a pre-dominantly Rails and Java shop.
Experience with deploying, supporting or building SaaS enterprise products in AWS, Google or Azure
Experience with AWS Cloud deployments, VMWare, Redis, RabbitMQ, Docker and Kubernetes a plus
Experience with Atlassian Suite (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket) as well as development and quality scanning tools such as Blackduck Hub, Sonarqube a plus
Demonstrated ability to manage across geographically distributed teams
Knowledge of agile/scrum methodologies and the ability to work in an agile environment
Experienced in effective communications to technical audiences in both verbal and written forms
Demonstrated ability to communicate and define best practices for performance
Management of vendors such as AWS, Atlassian and familiarity with software license management and provisioning
BS/BA degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent experience
Employee may be required to lift routine office supplies and use office equipment. Majority of the work is performed in a desk/office environment; however, there may be exposure to high noise levels, fumes, and biohazard material in the laboratory environment. Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
