Bell Labs, the Nobel Prize winning research organization, is accepting applications for our competitive internship program.

Bell Labs defines Nokia’s technological and architectural vision for the ICT industry, identifies the key challenges in this vision and invents solutions that are an order of magnitude (10X) better than existing solutions. It advises the industry on the economics of the vision and underlying technologies, and how best to transform to most efficiently achieve the goals. Application Areas:
Access: Project topics include new breakthrough technologies for the communications systems that directly connect with end users, wireless in 5G radios, transceiver design, massive MIMO, and communications theory, new disruptions in faster fiber and fiber-like speeds over copper to enable seemingly infinite capacity and edge clouds for low latency computing.

Application Platforms & Software Systems:
The Application Platforms & Software Systems Research Lab is inventing exciting technologies that will give people the one resource that is not renewable and cannot be created - time!

We do this by building software platforms that provide magical experiences. We make the magic possible by mastering the fundamentals of software methodologies, software design, and system implementation. We believe in theory and running code.

For 2019, we are particularly looking for students with interests and skillsets in AI/ML systems, software systems for robotics, data systems, and new paradigms for software development/testing.

Algorithms, Analytics, & Augmented Intelligence: Project topics include developing disruptive, breakthrough solutions to critically hard industry problems, accomplishing this in network protocols, algorithms addressing networks and other complex systems, data and user-security, network control systems, and useful and real-time analytics.

Smart Network Fabric: The Smart Network Fabric Lab delivers innovations which significantly improve the scale, flexibility, automation and agility of IP and optical networks. Projects in this area may include increasing optical data rates using novel spatial and signal processing techniques, flexible control of IP and optical networks as they evolve from best effort networks to deterministic networks, and novel applications of IP and optical innovations in data centers, access/edge clouds, metro and wide area networks.

E2E Network and Service Automation: Project topics include how mobile networks are used, through creation of future-proof, adaptive and massively scalable End-to-End solutions. Developing new architectures exploiting 5G and beyond.

Emerging Materials, Components and Devices: Project topics include solving the great device challenges of the future. Research areas include III-V devices, silicon devices, hybrid modules, and emerging materials.

Industry Standards: Project topics include defining the technology and architecture vision of Nokia and the industry by providing the architecture guide, developing standards, creating intellectual property assets, and providing compliance and reliability testing.

Experiments in Arts and Technology: Project topics include focus on coordinating all the interactions with artists, including managing the Artist in Residence (AIR) program, and will optimize the connection to, and utilization of, Bell Labs innovations in these collaborations.

Standardization Research: Projects focused on dedicated standards-related systems research in the areas of 3GPP Access & Core and Network Automation.

BHAG Realization: Project topics to include the development and realization of new Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) solutions that will redefine augmented human and machine intelligence.

Bell Labs Consulting: Project topics include Telecommunications network analysis, Web development, and Market research & benchmarking.

Student Criteria:
Overall GPA of 3.0/4.0 or above.

Must be enrolled as a full-time student.

Work Authorization: U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident preferred. Will accept students on F-1 Visa dependent upon program requirements or may consider sponsoring short-term J1 Visa PhD students dependent upon program requirements.

Education Requested:
Must be pursuing a degree in Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Biophysics, Business Modeling, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Microbiology, Nanotechnology, Operations Research, Physics, Statistics, Systems Engineering and Telecommunications from an accredited college/university.
