The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine is the third largest clinical department within the School of Medicine with 285 full-time faculty members, 280 clinical faculty members, and over 200 staff. Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department’s highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest. The Department’s robust research portfolio totals $35 million in grants and contracts per year for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health. The Department is recognized as an international leader in developing, testing, and implementing Collaborative Care, an integrated care model increasingly seen as a solution for population-based mental health care. Other areas of excellence include Addictions, Autism, High Risk Youth, Neurosciences, and Trauma, and the Department is developing innovative new programs in Technology and Mental Health, Global Mental Health, Maternal and Child Mental Health, and Targeted Intervention Development.
The Division of Population Health in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences currently has an outstanding opportunity for a RESEARCH CONSULTANT with strong analytical skills to contribute to health services and evaluation research by managing complex and diverse data activities, including managing large disease registry and complex claims datasets for processing in statistical software. Most of the projects are based on the Integrated Care Model and promote evidence-based treatment for common mental health problems, like depression, in general medical settings (e.g. primary care, disease management).
This is a leadership position that will be required to use independent judgment to manage large, complex data sets on a wide variety of research projects related to mental and behavioral health. The position will function independently managing and assessing integrity of databases, in addition to evaluating, selecting and apply standardized statistical methodologies. In collaboration with the senior statistician, the position will develop methods and procedures to support the design, execution and analysis of data for research studies, scientific presentation and scientific journals. Data sets include complex claims data requiring an understanding of how to clean and prepare these complex and varied data sets.
The position will have responsibility for coordinating the data management of large, diverse data sets for numerous research projects in the Division of Population Health. The integrity of these datasets and the related statistical evaluation is directly related to the success of Division research and related goals and purpose. The success of the research is directly related to improving mental health care by increasing the knowledge base for effective treatments and access to care. As part of the Division reslearch team, the position will have the responsibility of establishing and maintaining positive and effective relationships with a wide range of collaborators, colleagues, funders, faculty, staff, and community partners. The position will play a critical role in developing statistical and data management methods for sponsored research proposals and will influence the likelihood that these proposals are funded and successfully executed. The position will be a key contributer in the preparation of data for reports, project deliverables, grant applications and manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals. This effort will be a key aspect of the success of these products and the related Division goal and effort of improving behavioral and mental health care.
Research Activities (55%):
In collaboration with the senior statistician, the position will develop methods and procedures (e.g., defining objectives, subjects, data collection methods, etc.) to support the design, execution and analysis of data for research studies, scientific presentations and scientific journals. The position is responsible for the for the reporting tools and routine data reporting in support of research projects and programs.- The incumbent will work with the senior statistician to design approaches or the hypothesis to be tested and methodologies to be used in mental health research studies.
Database Management (30%):
Manage and assure the integrity of registry databases and various large-scale study and claims datasets for purposes of statistical analysis. - Perform detailed analyses of problems and inconsistencies in disease registry and claims datasets and develop effective methods for their resolution. - Prepare cleaned and ready-to-use analytical datasets for statistical analysis. - Manage data requests for end users including data extraction, query, merging and cleaning procedures to assemble secondary data from complex registry and claims databases into statistical software such as STATA, SPSS or SAS. - Pulling data from administrative databases and creating tables using SQL. - Independently write scripts (SQL, C++) to assist to extract data from datasets quickly and efficiently - Ensure the integrity of secondary data used in analysis by performing data checking, cleaning and quality assurance. - Independently evaluates, selects and applies standardized scientific procedures and techniques to assignments of moderate complexity.
Report Generation/Analysis (15%):
Prepare data for reports, project deliverables, grants preparation and manuscript publication in peer-reviewed journals. - Participate in the preparation and presentation of written reports and other presentations that summarize the analysis of data. - Create and maintain detailed, high quality records of data management and analytic activities. - Other relevant duties to support Division research and evaluation activities.
Master's Degree in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, public health or relevant quantitative field
One year work related experiences.
Proficiency with R, SAS, SQL, STATA or SPSS and Microsoft Office. -
Experience with large datasets, performing data extraction from relational databases, data cleaning, reporting and analysis. -
Demonstrated experience with data extraction, cleaning, reporting and analysis. -
Experience using observational/longitudinal datasets and conducting standard statistical methods such as survival analysis, mixed effects regression modeling.
Thorough knowledge of research study design and statistical concepts in health/social sciences field. -
Ability to determine proper statistical tests, pertinent formats for reports and data presentation, and ability to evaluate and communicate statistical limitations of data. -
Demonstrated attention to detail and creative problem-solving skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to work effectively both as a team member and independently with minimal supervision and ability to interact positively with a wide variety of people.
Fluent English communication skills, orally and in writing.
Ability to prioritize work appropriately, juggling short-term and long-term deadlines
