The Herald-Mail, an award-winning newspaper based in Western Maryland and covering parts of three states, has an immediate opening for a part-time Reporter. This position will primarily cover Berkeley County, W.Va., and the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.

Duties include, but are not limited to, covering government meetings, writing feature stories, taking photos and shooting and editing video. Work schedule usually Wednesday through Saturday. We're seeking a reporter with outstanding writing and reporting skills; and someone who possesses the highest ethics. The successful candidate will have a strong professional drive, the ability to hit deadlines and a knack for understanding complicated subjects and explaining them in readable stories. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Use of social media is essential.

Essential Functions:
  • Research news and potential news stories
  • Interview, check facts, and set up photo appointments
  • Stay in touch with sources/organizations about events/issues/news
  • Communicate with editors in a variety of ways about news production and scheduled stories
  • Write news and news features concisely, accurately and coherently under deadline pressure
  • Attend public meetings and ask relevant questions
  • Must be able to handle multiple reporting assignments and remain calm in a fast paced environment
  • Interview sources and interact with the public via e-mail, phone and in person
  • Attend daily newsroom meetings
  • Interact with readers via social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter etc.
  • In-depth proofreading for grammar, spelling
  • Able to work with all socio-economic levels within the community
  • Work on long-term projects, other general assignment stories, or special series
  • Ongoing communication with fellow reporters to answer questions on covered topics/issues
  • Fill in for general assignment shifts if necessary
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or related field preferred but not required
  • Previous reporting and writing experience with a newspaper or magazine preferred but not required
  • Excellent writing and reporting skills
  • Report in an accurate, fair, and balanced way
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to follow the new stories to completion
  • Ability to work individually and in a team environment
  • Willingness to collaborate on ideas, sources and stories with other reporters
  • Resourceful at finding and identifying local news in a timely fashion
  • Ability to build relationships with sources and peers
  • Ability - or at least the willingness to learn - to shoot and edit video and take basic photos
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office use
  • Attention to detail, ability to focus through interruptions
  • Adaptability to any sort of assignment or topic
  • Ability to innovate
  • Working knowledge of social media
