Houston Volunteer Lawyers (“HVL”), the pro bono service arm of the Houston Bar Association, is a 501(c)(3) organization, and its mission is to provide free legal services to low-income people in Harris County and to promote volunteerism among lawyers. HVL assists with family law, guardianship, estate planning, probate, tax disputes with the IRS, landlord/tenant disputes, homeownership, consumer issues, and bankruptcy. We do not assist with criminal, traffic, immigration, or fee-generating cases.
HVL is currently seeking an accountant.
Primary Responsibilities: The Accountant will:
Perform all aspects of the accounting function and work directly with an outside accounting firm, who provides oversight;
Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems in accordance with appropriate Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and regulatory requirements;
Perform bank reconciliations and other general ledger reconciliations;
Ensure that invoices are paid timely and properly recorded in the general ledger;
Be responsible for all financial, project/program and grants accounting; provide reasonable assurance for properly classifying expenses in accordance with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; produce timely and accurate financial reports for the government, corporate, foundation, and other funding sources;
Monitor accounts receivable and follow up on outstanding balances as needed;
Prepare cash flow forecasts;
Maintain fixed asset and depreciation schedule;
Be responsible for the processing of payroll;
Perform administration function of the 401(k) plan;
Assist the Executive Director with annual budget preparation;
Prepare audit schedules and work directly with external auditors;
Prepare documentation requested by funders and monitors;
Ensure timely and accurate grant reporting;
Review and approve all general ledger postings;
Be responsible for maintaining compliance of expense classification with various funder regulations;
Be responsible for timely and accurate payment to vendors;
Develop systems for effectively and efficiently tracking all grant expenditures on a monthly basis;
Review expenditures to ensure compliance with grant agreements;
Work with an external accountant to maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue and cash disbursements;
Produce financial reports, analyze financial data; monitor progress and changes and keep the Executive Director abreast of HVL’s financial status.
Qualifications:The ideal candidate will possess:
A bachelor’s degree in accounting;
5 years of relevant work experience;
Experience with not-for-profit and grant accounting is strongly desired.
Salary and other support:
The Staff Attorney will receive an annual salary of $60,000 to $75,000 depending upon qualification and experience, as well as these other benefits:
