POSITION PURPOSE:
The Administrator-in-Training (AIT) will complete the required minimum period of six (6) months (1040 hours) of training in long term care administration, becoming familiar with the Standards of Practice for Administrators and achieving a level of competency in the oversight of all departments of the facility.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:
- Complete the Self-Assessment Tool and develop an AIT plan with the Preceptor/Mentor.
- Become familiar with the Standards of Practice for Long Term Care Administrators.
- Become familiar with the job descriptions and leadership responsibilities of the Department Heads and assume an active leadership role as their assistant.
- Actively participate in management decisions during problem solving sessions.
- Become familiar with the myriad of duties to be accomplished within a long-term care facility to provide the highest quality of care.
- Understand the contribution each position within the facility makes to overall success of the program.
- Conduct daily rounds using eyes, ears, and nose, and report any concerns or problems to the appropriate department manager. Follow up to assure a solution is reached.
- Chair at least one committee meeting in each department to learn the different ways and means to reach consensus.
- Present at least one continuing education program relating to Ethics, and others as assigned.
- Assist in the (a) admission (b) discharge of a resident.
- Attend individual support plan/care plan meetings during the rotation in Programming, Nursing, Social Services, Behavior, Dietary and Recreation departments to understand the key role each plays in resident care.
- Reads the 24-hour reports for Programming and Nursing and make recommendations to assure positive outcomes, paying particular attention to quality resident care.
- At a minimum, manage four (4) complaint/incident investigations (real or simulated) from report to completion.
- Conduct a mock survey of each department during the rotation and report deficiencies, and plans of correction, to the Department Head.
- Develop a staff-scheduling log (real or mock) for one month.
- Participate in interviewing for new hires and involved with progressive disciplinary procedures as directed by the Administrator.
- Become familiar with accounting tasks including, but not limited to, accounts payable, receivables, setting up trust funds, logging to the general ledger, facility petty cash procedures, human resource and payroll procedures, etc.
- Complete daily log of hours for Department Head verification and signature.
- Complete any additional assignments or professional reading assigned by Preceptor/Mentor.
- Meet with the Preceptor/Mentor on a weekly basis that must include a minimum of eight (8) hours per week under the close, personal, and direct supervision of a certified preceptor.
- Must successfully complete and meet Preceptor’s assignments in the timeframe specified by Preceptor.
- Must complete a two-day training course with the Office of Licensure and Certification.
- Complete a final report of the AIT Program and an evaluation of the Preceptor.
- Must obtain a Mississippi Nursing Home Administrator’s License within eighteen (18) months from the start of the A.I.T. program.
LICENSURE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Is at least twenty-one (21) years of age;
- Is of good moral character.
- Is in good health
- Meets one of the following educational and/or experiential requirements for licensure:
- Has sixty-four (64) hours of college work from an accredited institution and has worked in a supervisory capacity in a Mississippi-licensed nursing home for a minimum of two (2) consecutive years immediately prior to or preceding the date on which the application for the Administrator-in-Training Program is made or received by the Nursing Home Administrators Board. For the purpose of meeting the educational requirements, quarter hours will be converted into semester hours by the current standard conversion rate according to Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL);
- Has an associate degree from an accredited institution and has worked in a supervisory capacity in a Mississippi-licensed nursing home for a minimum of two (2) consecutive years immediately prior to or preceding the date on which the application for the Administrator-in-Training Program is received by the Nursing Home Administrators Board;
- Has a bachelor’s degree in health care administration or a health care related field or business from an accredited institution before making application for Administrator-in-Training Program; or
- Has a bachelor’s degree in any field of study from an accredited institution before making application for the Administrator-in-Training Program;
- For the purpose of licensure, the academic program must be accredited by an institution recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to read, write and speak the English language in an understandable manner.
- Role model professional behavior by performing and/or assisting other staff, supervisors, peers, consultants and direct support staff in an effective, cooperative manner, in all duties.
- Must be of good moral character.
- Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with all consumers, personnel, residents, families, and visitors, etc.
- Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
- Must have the ability to work harmoniously with other personnel and be willing to manage persons of various maturity and cognitive abilities.
- Must have personal integrity, have flexibility, and the ability to work effectively with others.
- Must have and maintain a valid State of Mississippi drivers’ license and meet the criteria to be insured with the company’s motor vehicle insurance.
- Must become licensed as a Mississippi Nursing Home Administrator.
- Must work a forty (40) hour per week program (Monday – Friday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. or otherwise approved by the MSB of NHA) that must include a minimum of eight (8) hours per week under the close supervision of a certified preceptor.
- Failure to successfully complete licensing requirements within eighteen (18) months after beginning the A.I.T. program will result in the loss of all accomplishments and ineligible for the Assistant Administrator’s position.
