The EHS&S Specialist is to utilize scientific, engineering and other technical skills to support site EHS&S activities to develop and coordinate documentation, training, communication, scheduling and oversight needed to maintain compliance with government regulations and Johnson & Johnson policies related to Industrial Hygiene, Chemical Substance management and related OHSA programs. Provides focused technical expertise in the area of health and safety standards, hazard assessment, accident investigations, and emergency response to promote workplace and product safety.

The EHS&S Specialist will:
  • Leads all elements of plant Hazardous Communication programs including SDS management, Chemical Hygiene, Laboratory safety, Hearing Conservation, Blood borne Pathogen programs.
  • Monitors activities of operations, maintenance, and contractors to assure compliance with Hazardous Communication procedures and other EHS&S procedures and policies.
  • Consults with employees on the conduct and development of related Hazardous
  • Reviews operating and maintenance procedures for compliance with health and safety programs and policies. Ensure all changes to covered processes are controlled through the Control of Change and Pre-Startup Safety Review procedures. Ensure that adequate front-end engineering is performed for all proposed changes.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Ergonomic risk assessment, prevention and developing solutions to reduce ergonomic risks.
  • Facilitates internal compliance audits and leads resolution activities associated with gaps identified. May participate in internal audits performed at other locations; benchmarks best practices to implement and develop locally.
  • Representative EHS&S in external partner/regulatory agency interactions related to Industrial Hygiene and safety.
  • Lead or participate in Incident Investigations and Job Safety Analyses as needed.
  • Work with site management to ensure that Hazardous Communication information is maintained, to include Safety Data Sheets, Chemical Compatibility Charts, as well as Chemical risk assessments.
  • Completes Industrial Hygiene, environmental and/or safety reports as required by permit or regulation.
  • Reviews operating and maintenance procedures for compliance with health and safety programs and policies. Ensure all changes to covered processes are controlled through the Control of Change and Pre-Startup Safety Review procedures. Ensure that adequate front-end engineering is performed for all proposed changes.
  • Supports new Product introduction processes, technology transfer initiatives, and assessment/installation of new equipment and strategies at all stage gates of the process.
  • Supports site Emergency Response Team through attendance at meetings and training events and release modeling software. Provides content to emergency response plans and participates as part of the ERT.
  • Tours plant(s) to inspect and audit for safety requirements, identify and correct potential deficiencies.
  • Implements and provides training on health and safety policies and programs developed for a site to assure that workplace conditions follow all local government and company requirements.
  • Reviews and recommends content to improve the EHS&S Programs.
  • Learns to execute cost reduction and productivity improvement projects using Process or Design Excellence techniques. Utilizes appropriate risk management tools such as FMEA, HAZOP, and business risk evaluations.
  • Reviews new regulations from outside agencies and new Johnson and Johnson worldwide environmental health and safety policies and procedures against current site programs and practices for gaps.
  • Developing, interpreting and implementing appropriate process monitoring and control methods consistent with the level of risk.
  • Provide specific area expertise for the site OSHA VPP process as identified by EHS&S Manager.
  • Support and lead initiatives on site as required, including but not limited to: Behavioral Based Safety Program, safety outreach, EHS&S fair, annual gap assessments, and Slip, Trip and Fall Prevention
  • May occasionally provide backup leadership coverage for Site EHS Manager as needed, provides guidance and support to others in the EHS&S function.
  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required, preferably in an Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • A minimum of three (3) years related business experience is required.
  • Experience working in a chemical, pharmaceutical or food processing facility that required the use of chemical processes involving solvents and/or highly reactive chemicals is preferred.
  • Experience with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Clean Water Act and similar regulations is preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of government regulations related to EPA RMP & OSHA 1910 Standards, and company policies is required.
  • Ability to assess processes/systems to identify and troubleshoot complex issues regarding compliance to the standards, and can provide recommendations on corrective actions, and lead resolution efforts by partnering with various functional representatives is required.
  • Experience writing reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals is required.
  • Working knowledge of computerized maintenance management system, document control systems, and event tracking software is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to use complex Excel and analytical tools reflecting business knowledge at product code detailed level is required.
  • Shown ability to influence others and develop partnership and collaboration among different functional work groups is required.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and planning skills with heightened attention to detail is required
  • This position is located in Athens, GA and may require up to 10% of travel.
