Position Summary:

BostonSight® is a leading eye healthcare organization committed to improve quality of life by transforming the understanding, treatment, and care of the ocular surface. Our Center of Excellence in Needham, MA houses a medical clinic, a state-of-the-art manufacturing lab, and a research center.

The Controller works directly for the Chief Financial Officer, and is responsible for accounting systems, procedures and functions. Additional responsibilities include developing budgets and forecasts, analysis and reporting of financial information including sales production data, providing input to strategic decisions, managing and executing all aspects of accounts payable and receivable, regulatory filings, overseeing the annual audit process, coordinating business and liability insurance coverage, and administering the financial aid process for eligible patients. This position has a unique opportunity to become involved in numerous projects within a multi-faceted not-for-profit organization.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Manage all accounting systems and functions: safeguard assets and assure accurate and timely recording of all transactions in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles; maintain an orderly system of accounting records and files; post general journal entries; and ensure the accuracy of reported financial results
  • Establish, monitor, and enforce accounting policies and procedures and a comprehensive set of internal controls designed to mitigate risk
  • Complete budgets, forecasts, and department plans in coordination with multiple stakeholders
  • Manage all aspects of accounts receivable: ensure all patients have been properly charged for products and services; prepare invoices for external customers; ensure timely collection of payments; issue FitAssist vouchers; calculate bad debt and financial assistance allowances; and answer customer service questions in a timely manner
  • Manage all aspects of accounts payable: accurately record and ensure proper signoffs on invoices; process all invoices for payment; prepare checks for signature to ensure all accounts are paid on time
  • Record all daily banking transactions; prepare and submit weekly bank deposits and monthly bank reconciliations
  • Reconcile monthly donation deposits with the Annual Giving Manager
  • Manage physical inventory: create purchase orders; record sales receipts and returns; conduct monthly physical inventory counts in collaboration with departments; and reconcile data
  • Manage prepaid, fixed assets and liability schedules
  • Issue timely and complete financial statements including analyses and variance reports
  • Compile and analyze sales production and manufacturing data, calculate and issue financial and operating metrics, and prepare special reports for senior management by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends
  • Complete regulatory filings
  • Oversee the annual audit process: coordinate the provision of information to external auditors; provide answers to all questions; and complete any recommendations
  • Coordinate business and liability insurance coverage and manage professional insurance broker relationships
  • Manage commercial banking relationships
  • Administer the financial assistance process for eligible patients: ensure all applications are complete; maintain all financial assistance logs; and complete status notifications and adjustments for network sites
  • Complete various additional projects as assigned

Essential Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong ability to calculate, reason, analyze, and communicate complex financial, operational, and technical information, both verbally and in writing

Education and Experience:

  • BS in Business, Finance, Accounting or Health Care Management, MBA preferred
  • At least five years of experience; eye care / healthcare setting preferred

An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed below, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
