On October 7, 2019, the Gary Housing Authority - Gary EnVision Center received designation status as an "EnVision Center" from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); this demonstration is premised on the notion that financial support alone is insufficient to solve the problem of poverty. The designation status indicates that our EnVision Center, as well as the entire Gary community, is committed to solving the problem of poverty through co-locating supportive services within or near HUD-assisted housing to support residents and low-income households in achieving self-sufficiency. The Gary EnVision Center's mission is to empower people to fulfill their potential by providing the tools needed to succeed towards the goal of self-sufficiency; we will leverage public, private, and philanthropic resources to help Gary residents climb the ladder of opportunity. EnVision Centers will provide communities with a centralized hub of support in addressing four primary pillar areas: 1. Economic Empowerment: improve the economic sustainability of residents by empowering them with opportunities to improve their financial outlook; 2. Educational Advancement: presents educational opportunities directly to residents , while partnering with public and private organizations that approach education in nontraditional ways on nontraditional platforms; 3. Health and Wellness: improve access to health outcomes by individuals and families; 4. Character and Leadership: enable all residents (individuals and families), especially young people, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens by encouraging participation in volunteer and mentoring opportunities (which includes STEM, through our partners at 360 Cradles to Career). The VISTA members will assist in the program development and sustainable strategy for the Gary EnVision Center, as we strive to engage the community for the long-term.
