Position Summary: Under the supervision of Senior Manager or designee, responsible for support of any individual and/or group of clients within the facility, community and employment sites as outlined on Plan of Services. Work must be performed according to Johnston County Industries, Inc. (JCI) policies and standards dictated by Medicaid and MCO. Employees shall meet required credentialing qualifications, training, service provision, documentation and professional expectations. Work hours vary according to the needs of the client(s) and may consist of 10 – 40 hours per week. Competency shall be demonstrated based upon JCI philosophy of service provisions, Mental Health regulations and approved peer mentoring curriculum. The position is supervised by a Qualified Professional (QP).
Essential Functions: Attends staffing and plan development meetings to promote the use of self-directed advocacy tools, teaching and supporting individuals to ask for services that meet individual needs and understand components of individual plans. Provides education, self-advocacy and skills training and resources to the client(s) and aids in linking to supportive services and promotion of employment. Plans and coordinates wellness, self-advocacy, transportation, social skills training and/or support groups and teaches strategies and self-management strategies for use in employment and/or daily living. Maintains current documentation of required qualifications and certifications for employment as outlined by program guidelines. Provides information to assist with the coordination of services with other professionals, guardians, family members, vocational rehabilitation as allowed by confidentiality guidelines. Completes documentation on individual and group-related activities, progress and reports, employer feedback, etc. and submits to IPS Employment Supervisor. Provides delivery of skill-building activities such as daily and community living skills, socialization, employment, adaptation, symptoms monitoring, and management skills. It provides wellness education and direct interventions to assist in achieving rehabilitative goals. Models advocacy skills and provides outreach to encourage engagement and employment. Supports individuals in overcoming job-related concerns, community integration, and building social skills that will promote job acquisition and tenure. Provides client transportation as required. Completes in-service and external training as required.
Non-Essential Functions: Performs other work-related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Complete required training and execute methods of intervention. Basic academic skills to conduct training teach skill-building activities and document and maintain required records. Ability to communicate in oral and written form. General knowledge and lived experience, as a recipient or former recipient of services, with a mental illness, substance use and/or developmental disability. Ability to assist the client (s) in achieving and maintaining rehabilitative and recovery goals to successfully address employment and daily living goals. Ability to model self-advocacy skills and support vocational choices and needs in order to contribute to the individual, plan. Ability to be perceptive of client(s) needs and link to resources and provide training as necessary for employment and attainment of personal goals. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, agencies, and business representatives. Maintain credentialing documentation as required. Knowledge of available community resources. Insurable and valid NC driver’s license.
Education & Experience:
Minimum: High School Diploma or equivalent and one year lived experience as a recipient of services and certification as a Peer Support Specialist.
Required: Associate degree in Human Services or related field, one year lived experience as a recipient of services and certification as a Peer Support Specialist or other approved Peer Mentoring Curriculum.
Required Certifications/Licenses: NCI, CPR & First Aid/AED, NC Drivers License, Insurable, Certified Peer Support Specialist Certification.
Occupational Demands: Requires lifting up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds intermittently and the ability to bend stoop and push/pull. Required to spend 50 percent of time walking and 50 percent of the time in a sedentary position. Based on the needs of the client, assignments may require physical needs beyond those listed above due to the individuality of client(s) served – employment-related transportation training, mastery of job tasks at various employment sites. Specific physical demands will be reviewed with each applicant and accommodations provided that do not pose a threat to the health or safety of the client/staff. Demonstrates the ability to work cohesively with persons with disabilities requiring dealing with individuals with inappropriate behaviors, emotional crisis and/or physical aggression. Ability to separate pressures of work and home.
