About the Unit
The Contact Tracer is a 12 month term position and works with the Infection Control Lead, other members of the infection control program, and university administration to implement the campus-wide infection control program. Activities include: 1) Investigation of infection problems and outbreaks. 2) Performance of community-wide surveillance. 3) Interviewing of persons under investigation (PUIs). 4) Identification and follow-up on suspected cases. 5) Education of the community on best practices for infection control.
Legal & Regulatory Affairs
Responsible for providing advice and services to University officials on legal issues associated with the University’s activities, including transactional and intellectual property matters, policy formulation and compliance, employment and student issues, and pre-litigation dispute resolution. Represents the University’s interests in administrative and judicial proceedings. Holds primary institutional responsibility for establishing and maintaining relationships with regulatory and other governmental entities, and establishing and maintaining related compliance policies and protocols.

Designs, develops, and implements environmental, health, and safety programs and procedures for the University and the surrounding community. Enables effective and compliant work practices that ensure a healthy and safe educational and work environment. Ensures that all facilities are in compliance with regulations, and directly engages state and federal workplace safety agencies.
T2: Expands skills in own work area within an analytical/scientific method or operational process. Maintains appropriate licenses, training and/or certifications, as needed. Applies experience and skills to complete assigned work within our area of expertise. Works within standard operating procedures and/or scientific methods. Works with a moderate degree of supervision.
The job provides technical support activities related to the design, development, and implementation of environmental, health, and safety programs and procedures for the University and the surrounding community. Provides support to enable effective and compliant work practices, ensuring a healthy and safe educational and work environment. Works within defined processes and procedures to ensure that all facilities are in compliance with regulations, and engages state and federal workplace safety agencies. Completes work with a moderate degree of supervision.
1) Under a moderate degree of supervision, assists in the implementation of the University's environmental health and safety programs to safeguard employees and ensure legal compliance., 2) Works within defined processes to conduct inspections and tests of instruments, laboratories and/or other facilities to ensure proper functioning and compliance with government laws and University policies., 3) Compiles data and assists with preparing reports. Performs data entry and helps maintain required documentation., 4) Completes a variety of assignments, such as equipment calibration, specialized cleaning, and waste storage and removal, as needed., 5) Performs other related work as needed.
1) Collaborates with Infection Control Lead to identify and investigate any instances of communicable disease on-campus.
2) Performs analysis of data, and prepares reports, including relevant charts, tables and graphs of communicable disease on-campus.
3) Interviews PUIs and contacts to determine level of exposure.
4) Provides timely written and verbal reports of findings, investigations of problems or important inquiries, and ensures that recommendations are implemented and problems are resolved.
5) Assesses the need for isolation precautions and institutes these precautions correctly. With assistance, investigates and accurately characterizes suspected infection problems, clusters or outbreaks including exposures to communicable diseases.
6) Provides recommendations on best practices on infection control to patients so that their risk can be reduced.
7) Accurately and clearly summarizes findings and makes recommendations to adjust or change practice. Provides consultation to Infection Control Lead concerning infection control problems or concerns.
8) Appropriately follows and applies current standards and regulations from, but not limited to, University of Chicago Medicine (UCM), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA), The Joint Commission (tJC), Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), College of American Pathologists (CAP), American Institute of Architects (AIA), American Association of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN).
9) Provides required information about communicable disease cases and outbreaks to Infection Control Lead or appropriate personnel.
10) Reviews literature, regulations, standards, and recommends changes in practice as applicable.
11) Reviews and understands the University’s infection prevention control policies and procedures based on medical-scientific information, regulatory agency requirements, and conditions on-campus.
12) Develops draft recommendations to reduce patient risk based on review. With assistance, accurately completes an Infection Control Risk Assessment. Ensures patient is made aware and understands recommendations to reduce risk.
13) Monitors and makes note of patient compliance of these recommendations. With assistance, responsible for identification, investigation, notification, and follow-up of exposures to communicable.
14) Advises potentially exposed individuals on next steps including how to isolate and where to find testing resources.
15) Advises exposed individuals on University’s policy for interacting and returning to the on-campus community when under suspicion or when diagnosed have positive for infectious disease.
16) Assists with emergency planning or procedures as needed. Responds to and identifies issues related to patient safety and with assistance makes appropriate recommendations for resolution or referral to other departments, such as Risk Management, Safety, and/ or Quality.
17) Maintains accurate and accessible records of on-call and significant job activities, such as surveillance and investigation activities.
1) Thorough understanding of the concept of confidentiality.
2) Ability to interact with persons from multiple cultural, ethnic, and racial backgrounds with respect and compassion in context of infectious disease investigation.
3) Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
4) Ability to work well with senior management, directors, medical staff, and employees at all levels of the organization and externally.
5) Excellent computer skills, including advanced use of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
6) Must be able to operate common teleconferencing applications such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and others.
7) Requires an understanding of basic epidemiologic methods and statistics.
8) When on-call, must be able to respond to a page or telephone call and report to the University, if needed, within one hour.
9) Must have strong organizational and time management skills.
10) Must be able to work independently to collect and critically evaluate information to characterize and manage infection problems.
11) Must have ability to identify best approach to problems/questions, and determine when to seek additional guidance.
12) Must have the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
13) Must be able to identify and evaluate situations in which place patients or staff are at immediate infection risk and implement timely interventions to reduce risk.
Within the first 12 months of employment
1) Have a working knowledge of patient care practices, asepsis, disinfection and sterilization, adult education principles, epidemiology and disease transmission, surveillance techniques, statistical methods used in Infection Control, and occupational health issues as they relate to infection control, performance measurement, and improvement principles.
2) Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge base in the area of Infection Control and Prevention and functions as a professional role model.
3) Assumes responsibility for maintaining own competency and continued education in infection control by reviewing current literature and seeking out new standards and regulations.

Education, Experience, and Certifications
Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).
Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
1) CIC or CBIC certification or pursuit of certification.
1) Experience in public health (or related field).
