Paralegal sought to work with passionate advocates at Colorado’s largest disability rights social justice organization. This is a great opportunity to learn about the practice of civil rights law. Being the only paralegal in a small but busy civil rights legal program enables the individual to see all aspects of civil rights litigation. The paralegal reports directly to Legal Program Director with supervision from CCDC Legal Program Attorneys.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

LEGAL

  • Provides assistance with all cases, including research, document drafting, hearings, depositions and trials
  • Proofreads, cite checks and files legal documents
  • Screens and performs intake calls, summarizes intakes for attorneys’ consideration
  • Meets weekly with Legal Program attorneys to discuss status of cases and intakes
  • Codes and manages all documents obtained through discovery
  • Responsible for management of all Court documents and those obtained through records requests and discovery process, including reviewing documents for coding, Bates labeling and preparing for productions
  • Calendars all legal events, including Court deadlines (critical not to make any errors on Court-imposed deadlines), speaking engagements, consulting, presentations
  • Assist Legal Program attorneys with investigations of cases, including, without limitation, surveying accessibility of buildings and facilities, researching ownership of facilities, preparing and administering records requests for information for determination of whether litigation is needed
  • Communication with courts and opposing counsel and opposing counsel’s administrative staff regarding exchange of information and documents
  • Attend settlement meetings, mediations, Court appearances and other case-related events with attorneys; requires professional attire and conduct (in-office is business casual and less formal)
ACCOUNTING

  • Tracks billing for all Legal Program cases; proofreads and prepares final bills for submission to Courts, Legal Program attorneys, co-counsel and opposing counsel
  • Keeps accounting records for COLTAF and Legal Program accounts; prepares accounting memos to ensure all Legal Program expenditures are accounted for
ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Maintains office records including Legal Program files, documentation and storage, filing systems, directories and databases
  • Processes and distributes Legal Program correspondence
  • Performs any administrative tasks necessary to the Legal Program
  • Assists Legal Program Director, who has a disability, with physical work-related tasks and occasional disability-related tasks (e.g., you may be asked to put a lunch in a microwave if the Legal Program Director who can’t reach the microwave, or carry something to Court)
  • Maintains Legal Program website, updates Legal Program social media and Alert system on an ongoing basis; performs ongoing confirmation of accuracy and correctness of Legal Program information posted on these platforms
  • May be requested to perform administrative tasks and assisting with events unrelated to Legal Program for other CCDC programs to be done only with prior permission of the Legal Program Director (e.g. Executive Assistant for Director may need administrative support; CCDC holds annual Access Awards ceremonies and other fundraising events)
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Paralegal certificate or equivalent experience required (CCDC’s Legal Program seeks a candidate who has knowledge and proficiency in proofreading of documents and cite checking for predominantly federal Court practice using Westlaw with minimal training on starting date of employment)
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  • Ability to maintain office organization and manage projects independently
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable with working and interacting with all kinds of people and, in particular, with all kinds of disabilities and accepting of a diverse workplace
  • Competent with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Chrome and Google Drive and entire Google products line (Sheets, Docs, etc.), CiviCore (upgrading soon), WordPress and Acrobat (these are the most commonly used programs); the LPA must be computer literate, capable of and proficient in adjusting to use of new software as needed when changed and upgraded; also required proficiency in handling technical aspects of Federal courtroom technology and technology for Presentations (e.g. preparing a professional PowerPoint presentation with the ability to run it from a laptop computer while projecting onto a large screen); ability to ensure all documents prepared and posted for the public are in an accessible format for individuals who are blind
  • Ability to drive and hold a valid driver’s license with a good driving record
  • Ability to work in a busy, but collegial, collaborative environment

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision when needed and collaboratively with small or large groups when needed
  • Extreme attention to detail and high level of accuracy (the federal court system and the Legal Program place a high value on perfection in documentation)
  • Ability to contemporaneously keep track of own time for purposes of billing, both when cases are completed and for administrative tasks
  • Absolute ability to maintain confidentiality of attorney-client privileged and other sensitive information
  • Ability to pass background check
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to assist attorneys with disabilities with job-related tasks, including transporting large boxes of documents, document manipulation during hearings and depositions, and setting up and using electronic equipment in office, hearings, depositions, courtrooms and for presentations
  • Ability to work at a computer for long periods of time
  • Ability to communicate with others quickly and be patient with those who may have communication-related impairments
  • Ability to perform repetitive movements, such as typing, filing, and the use of commonly used office machines and supplies
  • Ability to stand, kneel, squat and otherwise move take measurements and photographs of buildings, facilities and elements (everything from seating areas on buses to the dimensions of the bathroom stalls) covered by the Americans with Disability Act Standards for Accessible Design
OTHER DETAILS

  • Start date: position is open immediately with training with a current LPA and attorneys
  • Annual Salary: $36,000 - $41,000 (starting rate based on experience)
  • Benefits are not available, but liberal PTO available with permission by attorneys
  • Expected hours are in-office Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; however, ability to arrive early and stay late upon occasion is essential (e.g., although trials are infrequent, additional time will be expected, but may be exchanged for PTO time; plenty of notice for such expected times is always provided)
  • Working from home or other remote location is only permitted when office can't be accessed or with prior approval of Legal Program Director; this job is considered to be an in-office position, regardless of whether attorneys are working in office or not
