Based in the beautiful City of Chicago, Illinois Safe Schools Alliance (the Alliance) is a program of Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago (PHIMC). The Alliance’s mission is to promote safety, support, and healthy development for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ+) youth in Illinois schools and communities, through advocacy, education, youth organizing, and research. While this position will be based in Chicago, as an Alliance VISTA, you will build the Illinois Safe Schools Consortia in northern Illinois. Through this consortia, you will increase the Alliance’s impact by providing the tools and resources to equip experts in each Regional Office of Education (ROE) in Northern Illinois to provide training, advocacy, and technical assistance services to their respective school districts. As the Professional Development and Training VISTA you will build capacity at PHIMC to increase the Alliance’s professional development and training efforts, develop a system to evaluate the effectiveness of professional development work in the consortia, and create toolkits and a train the trainers system to create sustainability. Please note: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this role will begin in a remote capacity. The member may be asked to start serving in person in Chicago beginning the Summer of 2021.
Member Duties : As a VISTA member with Illinois Safe Schools Alliance you will help create safer schools for LGBTQ+ youth in Northern Illinois by creating the infrastructure and tools needed to build a consortia of safe school leaders in Northern Illinois. Major functions will include: research professional development efficacy best practices and develop a system to evaluate the impact of professional development work within the consortia, assess PHIMC’s programs for opportunities for increased professional development and training, research and develop a train the trainers system to create more sustainable professional development trainings, and develop a professional development and training toolkit for consortia representatives.
