Currently there is one (1) full-time vacancy in the Recreation & Senior Services Department. The eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill future Marketing Specialist vacancies as they occur.

DEFINITION: To enhance the image and awareness of Department programs and services through the production of various collateral materials with the intent to advertise, promote and encourage participation in Department events and activities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: This position reports directly to the Recreation Manager.

Essential Duties:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Use current computer software to layout, create artwork, and perform design services for a variety of materials including publications, pamphlets, booklets, brochures, flyers, posters, programs, forms, logos, newsletters, banners, advertisements, calendars, catalogs, and invitations;

• Collaborate with staff to design and create annual Marketing Plan and concepts for Department-wide programs; recommend methods of visual presentation;

• Provide social media and website design;

• Prepare marketing collateral budget;

• Write press releases and feature articles on special events and programs;

• Develop relationships with media representatives to promote Department activities;

• Prioritize projects and meet deadlines;

• Provide assistance in the development of individual Department websites;

• Photograph events, activities, and programs as needed;

• Enhance and correct photographs through the use of graphic design software;

• Coordinate projects with internal customers, outside consultants and vendors;

• Work with external vendors within established City procurement purchasing procedures; and

• Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Knowledge of:

Adobe Creative Suite 5+ Master with heavy emphasis utilizing InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop;

Creative design, print publication, advertising and commercial print processing;

Various computer software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint;

Principles, practices, and techniques of marketing, public relations, and communications;

Printing and reproduction processes and layout/design implications, including typographical standards, printing inks, and binding methods;

Business English, grammar, punctuation, and spelling;

Standard proofreading and editing practices;

Fundamentals of writing and page layout; and

Operation of various digital cameras.

Ability to:

Develop original concepts for enhancing the image and awareness of Department programs and services through the production of various collateral materials;

Create original ideas within short time frames and tight deadlines;

Serve as the Department's public and media relations, marketing and brand management function in the advertisement of programs;

Develop and illustrate attractive graphic designs;

Prepare layouts and camera ready artwork;

Write and edit original press releases, news articles, brochures, pamphlets, and other promotional materials for a variety of audiences including children and professional associations;

Proofread thoroughly and prepare work with careful attention to detail;

Take photographs;

Learn and participate in the organizational structure of the City; and utilize appropriate City services to accomplish Departmental goals;

Prepare, distribute and implement a production schedule and ensure projects are delivered according to schedule and within budget;

Manage designated printers, vendors, contractors and other outside service providers and obtains bids for printing services;

Stage shoots, retouch and prepare photos for designated purpose using specialized computer applications;

Appear for work on time;

Follow directions from a supervisor;

Accept constructive criticism;

Understand and follow posted work rules and procedures;

Understand and follow oral and written instructions;

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing with those contacted in the course of work including with supervisors, staff members, external and internal customers; and

Establish and maintain effective working relationships in a diverse organization and with government officials, media representatives, and community and business groups.

This position may be required to work a varied schedule.

Experience & Training and License/Certificate:

A combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Three (3) years professional experience in graphic design, marketing, public relations, or closely related field. Experience must include both graphic design and writing with a minimum of six (6) months in each discipline.

Training: Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college or university in graphic design, marketing, communications or closely related field. A Bachelor's degree is preferred.

License/Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license.
