Lead Histotechnologist/histotechnician
Yellowstone Pathology Institute, Inc. (YPI) seeks a full-time lead histotechnologist or histotechnician to join our progressive, upbeat, and fast paced, local and independently owned laboratory in Billings, Montana. We seek to fill this position immediately.
YPI is a CAP certified reference laboratory which currently consists of eight general pathologists serving hospitals and clinics throughout Montana, Northern Wyoming, and Eastern Idaho. The pathology staff has subspecialty training and expertise in dermatopathology, gastrointestinal/liver pathology, cytopathology, hematopathology, and molecular pathology. Cases vary in composition and complexity.

JOB SUMMARY:
Lead Responsibilities: Oversee CAP related tasks associated with regulatory and quality performance metrics. Work in collaboration with Laboratory Operations Director on all department process improvement initiatives and goals of laboratory. No management of staff involved in this position.
Histotech Related Responsibilities: Perform all duties required for histologic examination of tissues. Embeds tissue samples, operates tissue processor, microtome and stainer, cuts and stains frozen section specimens, performs routine microtomy and performs special stains as requested.
Responsibilities include gross exam of surgical pathology specimens. While performing dissection/grossing duties, the histology technician is under the direct supervision of a board-certified Pathologist.
Knowledge, ability and technical skills to perform surgical pathology gross examinations and appropriate equipment maintenance.
Duties may also include the procurement of tissues for research, tissue banking, or other specialized studies as necessary. Ability to anticipate and respond to all types of surgical pathology specimens with respect to selecting appropriate tissues reflective of the clinical history.
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:
- Five years or more (5+) experience in histology preferred. Prior Lead Experience a plus.
- Must be able to cut tissue using a microtome and perform associated stains using lab equipment.
- Must demonstrate familiarity with anatomy, physiology, medical terminology and computer operations.
- Basic knowledge of human anatomy, macrosurgical techniques, general laboratory skills.
- Understanding of safety and infection control requirements of position.
- Demonstrates ability to obtain and prepare tissue for pathology evaluation, aids pathologists, in a timely and quality manner.
- Previous hospital lab experience a plus.
EDUCATION: Minimum college course work in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology or histotechnician program. Knowledge and theory of pathologic disease processes, gross and microscopic anatomy, medical terminology, procedural skills and laboratory tests which relate to the field of surgical pathology.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY: Histotechnician or histotechnologist ASCP certification preferred. Bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited program preferred.
APTITUDES:
- Must be able to pay close attention to microscopic detail.
- Must demonstrate sufficient dexterity to cut very fine tissue.
- Must have flexible work schedule to include early mornings, and rotation of Saturdays and holidays.
- Must be flexible with some travel to our Cody WY location (very infrequent); this is a rotation with individuals in the histology department.
- Must be flexible and organized to be able to perform special stains as requested.
- Demonstrate ability to perform duties with exceptional accuracy and efficiency.
- Ability to cope with a high work volume, requiring rapid production of accurate and satisfactory specimens for microscopic evaluation.
- Ability to work closely with others within all areas of laboratory and with flexibility.
- Processing of specimens including inking and cutting of specimen and submission specimen to histology using standardized protocols.
- Assists in the preparation and performance of surgical specimen dissection by assuring appropriate specimen accessioning and obtaining clinical history, laboratory data, radiographs and scans when indicated.
- Perform duties as assigned by the Laboratory Operations Director and designated Pathologist(s).
- Demonstrate ability to plan and use time wisely.
- Must demonstrate effective communication skills.
- Ability to represent the laboratory in a positive and professional manner.
Job Type: Full-time
Salary: $35.00 starting per hour. Salary depending on experience and credentials.
