The Physician Assistant will perform under the responsibility and supervision of the surgeon, diagnostic and therapeutic tasks to allow the physician to extend his services through the more effective use of his knowledge in the sphere of decision-making required to establish diagnosis and to plan therapy. He/she may assist in gathering the data necessary in implementing the therapeutic plan of the surgeon. A major role will be as a patients advocate in the medical are system serving as confidants, advisors and liaisons between patients and physicians.
Performance will be judged by the effectiveness and accuracy with which the physician assistant responsibilities are initiated and executed; by the extent to which the PA cooperated with the physicians, nursing personnel, receptionists, and laboratory rsonnel in assuring a smoothly coordinated effort in delivering quality patient care; by meeting the necessary requirements for certification and re-certification; by the degree of support given to the Chief of the Service of Cardiothoracic Surgery in identifying, communicating and assisting in the solution of given department problems; and by the courtesy shown to patients in the department.
Education & Certifications: Bachelor of Science degree in a physical science from an accredited institution required. Must be a graduate of an accredited physician assistant/surgical assistant program. Must complete courses of training for both basic and advanced cardiac life support.
Must be certified or eligible for certification by the NCCPA (National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants) and Pennsylvania State Board of Medical Education and Licensure.
Experience: Two (2) years recent experience in cardiothoracic surgery preferred. Recent Board eligible graduate acceptable.
