Job Description Summary

This position is part of Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS), BD’s largest Business Unit with 3.8B in annual revenue. MDS is comprised of the world leading products needed to safely prepare and administer medication, such as: intravenous catheters, IV sets, connectors, flush syringes, Chloraprep infection prevention products, hazardous drug safety containment items, and hypodermic syringes. MDS is focused on reducing complications, improving patient safety/outcomes, and lowering total cost of care around the world.
The Manager of Strategic Innovation will work within the Strategic Innovation Group to support the team’s charter to develop future innovative product concepts, services and/or value offerings for MDS, beyond BD’s core global platforms. This role involves researching and assessing market and clinical trends to identify unmet customer needs, leading to growth opportunities. The Manager will support evaluation of concepts from a commercial, technical and clinical perspective with the goal of advancing opportunities through the innovation process until they enter the Global Product Development System (GPDS). The role will report to the Vice President, Strategic Innovation MDS and will be located at BD’s global headquarters in Franklin Lakes, NJ.
The Manager will collaborate with cross-functional team members (R&D, Medical Affairs, Quality, etc.), regional sales teams, customers and key opinion leaders. This role will partner with these experts to gather their feedback to identify, assess and build support for innovation business cases that expand the MDS portfolio and deliver new solutions to customers worldwide. New opportunities may result from external business development or internal research and development.
Lead fact-based market and customer insights research to support the assessment of new opportunities within MDS “hunting ground” market sectors that accelerate revenue growth worldwide.
Support the creation of business cases for “outside the home court” innovation (i.e. white space and gray space), including cross-platform and cross-BU opportunities, organic and inorganic.
Support cross-functional evaluation of growth opportunities to identify underlying clinical needs, evaluate market size and optimal segmentation, assess customer willingness-to-pay and adoption, identify likely regulatory pathways, assess IP and evaluate possible partnership/acquisition scenarios.
Partner with R&D Innovation teams and Medical Affairs to explore product concept design options and to assess technical development and manufacturing feasibility.
Support external ethnographic research projects, interview clinical and commercial subject matter experts and attend MDS-related conferences / tradeshows to surface and prioritize new opportunities.
Build comprehensive business cases for new areas of opportunity with financial, commercial, regulatory and operational details.
The successful candidate will have a proven record of supporting the assessment of innovation opportunities in white spaces, determining best path forward, and driving both organic and inorganic innovation, within the healthcare industry. Strong strategic and analytical capability is required, with strategy consulting experience a plus. The candidate will also have a reputation and record of effective collaboration with peers, subordinates and superiors as well as outside advisors and customers.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes:
Demonstrated strategic capabilities, ideally with management consulting or venture capital foundation at a top tier company.
Advanced fact-based, critical thinking skills that are used to develop strategies and proposals including financial analysis, market sizing and competitive landscape assessment.
Experience in facilitating field research with customers, preferably in a hospital setting.
Highly effective interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence that have resulted in positive relationship building, with the ability to work in a highly matrixed organization and to influence without authority.
High integrity and ethics and strong fit with BD values.
Bachelor’s Degree and MBA required (or equivalent education or work experience), with focus on sciences/engineering a plus.
Minimum of 3 years of experience in Strategic roles (management consulting, strategic innovation) with some experience in the MedTech or healthcare industries.
Some strategic marketing experience desirable in established global healthcare company.
