Full Job Description
Seattle Genetics collects extensive medical history information on patients enrolled in sponsored clinical trials. This information, which includes prior therapies and medications, is often stored in free text that is difficult to use in exploratory analyses to better understand the efficacy and safety of our drugs. The intern for this project would work with computational biologists within TDAB to develop a microservice to transform medical history free text to structured data and subsequently use that data in secondary analyses in combination with patient response data.
Develop a data processing pipeline within Python (preferred) or R for transforming free text to structured data
Utilize public and internal databases to standardize prior treatment and medication nomenclature
Help develop schema for efficient storage of medical history in a relational database to enable rapid lookup of data for secondary analyses
Work within TDAB and in collaboration with IT to deploy a production data processing pipeline to the Azure cloud as a microservice reachable via a well described API
Work to generalize any successes with a deployed data pipeline to other problems transforming unstructured free text to structured data within Translational Sciences
Pursuing a degree in a related field
Experience working on text mining or natural language processing data science projects, preferably with publicly available examples of related source code
Experience with either Python or R and familiarity with popular data science and natural language frameworks within either or both
Familiarity with best practices around Git-based source code control
Some familiarity with basic DevOps responsibilities and practices
Experience working with a major cloud platform (AWS, GCP, Azure) is also useful
Note: This is a paid internship. This position is open to all students legally authorized to work in the United States. We are not able to offer visa sponsorships. While housing is not provided by SeaGen we make every effort to connect fellow interns to arrange for joint housing and ride sharing.
