To provide customer oriented clinical, operational and management leadership to the nursing unit to ensure delivery of efficient, cost effective, quality patient care by creating a work atmosphere conducive to professional growth, accountability and autonomy. Under the general direction of the Chief Nurse Executive Vice President of Patient Care Services and in accordance with standards of care and and within established practice by Catholic Medical Center and departmental policies and procedures, the incumbent plans and directs departmental activities towards the achievement of departmental and hospital goals and objectives. Planning/Organizing Ensures that the department functions in accordance with all regulatory agency standards, i.e., JCAHO, OSHA, ANA, and other appropriate standards of care. Monitors departmental compliance with Infection Control Standards, policies, and procedures. Establishes efficient, cost effective processes for the department. Prepares annual departmental budget including projected census, revenues, staffing plans, operating expenses, and capital related requests. Involves staff and medical staff when possible. Monitors monthly financial and cost accounting statement and identifies variances. Submits reports as requested to the Vice President of Patient Care Services to outline corrective strategies for variances. Maintains appropriate inventory and monitors on an ongoing basis. Conducts product evaluations and makes recommendations to purchase in collaboration with staff and physicians. Fosters an atmosphere of open and responsive communication among staff, ancillary departments, medical staff and other department directors. Maintains open communication with staff and the public to plan and improve health services. Acts as a role model for the Clinical Leader and staff. Conducts research and feasibility studies to support program expansion and special projects. Fosters staff and physician participation in the development and implementation of annual departmental goals and objectives which are consistent with the mission of Catholic Medical Center. Provides direction and coordination in emergency situations and scheduled hospital drills. Teamwork and Communication Develops and maintains all Quality Management activities including research techniques, data review, problem identification, implementation and evaluation of performance according to established standards. Monitors patient outcomes and facilitates process improvement strategies to ensure quality services. Maintains 24 hour accountability for department management with assistance from clinical leader or charge nurse. Provides direct patient care as needed in emergency situations. Demonstrates management of patient care by providing general supervision and serving as a resource to staff carrying out patient care activities. Promotes the philosophy of service excellence internally and externally. Exhibits a professional approach/demeanor. Fosters the participation of staff in planning, implementing, and evaluating clinical practice to provide safe, efficient, and therapeutic patient care. Ensures that appropriate levels and number of staff are available to meet the needs of the patient population. Develops master staffing plan in concert with standards of care for patient populations. Interviews and selects candidates for employment. Initiates and approves personnel activities including, but not limited to hiring, transferring, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and terminating in conjunction with the Human Resources Department. Establishes and communicates performance and behavioral expectations and professional and personal goals of staff. Monitors and evaluates staff performance and conducts timely formal/informal annual performance evaluations recommending appropriate merit increases. Demonstrates sound management skills, including conflict management, and assists staff to resolve related problems. Fosters a respectful and positive work environment. Fosters multidisciplinary collaboration to provide optimal outcomes. Delegates responsibility and accountability as evidenced by staff involvement and ownership in committees, projects, educational programs, and unit goals, etc., in order to provide staff with opportunities for professional growth. Conducts regularly scheduled staff meetings to share information with staff and receive feedback. Evaluating Monitors and evaluates the quality of patient care in the department to ensure safe, competent clinical practice. Use sound judgment, is decisive and effective in reaching conclusions; helps people understand reasons for decisions. Evaluates and participates in the annual review and revision of nursing and departmental specific policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, standards of care, and pathways. Maintains an awareness of interdisciplinary documentation. Develops, implements, and monitors departmental educational programs to ensure staff competence. Collaborates with the Department of Education to plan and implement staff developmental programs aimed at advancing clinical nursing practice and professional growth. Supports and/or participates in research activities. Ensures that all instruments, equipment, and specialty supplies are available and maintained. Maintains appropriate inventory of all supplies. Ensures compliance with the Safe Medical Device Act. Maintains documentation as required. Accountablity Maintains and updates knowledge and skills in management and clinical specialty. Pursues opportunities for professional and personal growth of self and others. Submits yearly performance self-evaluation and develops professional goals. Demonstrates active involvement in hospital and/or nursing committees. Represents Catholic Medical Center in professional and/or community organizations. Conforms to the organization's attendance requirements. Accepts constructive feedback and initiates appropriate actions to correct the situation. Assists staff to understand fiscal responsibilities of the organization and accepts changes as they occur. Completes required documentation accurately and timely.


QUALIFICATIONS Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. A Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent. M.S. preferred. Experience: At least three years of clinical experience in an acute healthcare institution. Management and/or leadership experience required. Licensure/Certification: Current registration in the State of NH as registered nurse.
