BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum high school diploma, general education (GED) or equivalent combination of education and experience.

STATE REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS

Valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements, American Red Cross First Aid Certificate, and completion of van driver training requirements.

LOCAL REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS

Complete a Child Protective Services check and a Sworn Disclosure Statement every three (3) years. Complete required training hours by May 31st of each year; carry activated charcoal preparation in the van while transporting children, maintain a document containing current local emergency contact information, potential shelters, hospitals, routes, that pertain to each authorized school site frequently driven by the Van Driver for pickup/drop off of children to or from schools; carry updated emergency contact information for each student that is transported at any time in the van.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The employee must have sufficient strength and agility to move, lift and secure students in child safety restraint systems weighing up to 40 pounds and assist students weighing 60-100 pounds in entering and exiting the Van in routine and emergency situations, and must be able to re-enter the emergency door to assist other students. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand. The employee must be able to smell smoke, fuel and other odors.

BASIC FUNCTION/NATURE OF WORK

The Van Driver operates a van to transport students to and from their authorized Fairfax County School locations and provides transportation service for field trips on an as needed basis. The van driver is responsible for safety and economical service. The van driver operates the bus in compliance with Academy’s policies and regulations, and state laws.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Understands and complies with conditions of the van driver contract, published regulations, written operating procedures, and a supervisor’s verbal instructions.
  • Inspects van for defects (pre-op inspection), keeps interior of bus, windows, lights, lettering, and mirrors clean.
  • Reports mechanical defects promptly to the Director of MCDA.
  • Takes van to the maintenance shop for preventative maintenance, scheduled monthly inspections, and repairs as needed.
  • Takes van to assigned refueling location as needed.
  • Administers first aid and/or cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when required.
  • Assists in the loading and unloading of students.
  • Assists in securing students for transport using passenger restraint systems (booster car seats, safety vests, lap belts, etc.) when students’ needs require the use of such systems.
  • Operates the van only on assigned van route and time schedule.
  • Recommends improvements and changes to van routes, stops or schedules.
  • Maintains acceptable level of student discipline.
  • Completes Student Discipline Referral form and submits it to the Director or the designated administrator when discipline problems occur.
  • Completes and submits an accurate van use schedule as required by Board of Directors.
  • Submits an accurate and complete weekly Time Sheet in accordance with the published schedule.
  • Attends required training and meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Type: Part-time

Salary: $10.00 to $15.00 /hour
