DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:
1 East is a locked and secured 24-bed unit and services patients 18 through older adult. Services criteria includes the presence of life threatening and/or severely incapacitating symptoms and Potential of harm to self or others is considered serious. Patients are admitted Through Psychiatric Access department in the Emergency Department at SJMHS. In most cases face to-face assessments will be required and in other cases transfers or direct admissions from other locations may occur.

General Summary

Under the direction and supervision of the Nurse Manager provides support for patients, visitors and colleagues on assigned nursing units. Facilitates efficient patient throughput including admissions, discharges and transfers. Supports patient experience and culture of safety goals through equipment maintenance, unit supplies, unit appearance and overall environment of care. Provides reception type services to patients, families, visitors and other unit guests.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Functions as communication resource on the patient care unit using available technology. Demonstrates excellent telephone skills. Manages clerical component of patient information through the episode of care

Completes all necessary functions associated with patient admission, discharge and transfer.
Assembles and maintains patient medical records from admission through discharge.
Rounds regularly on all printers; distributes or files printed information.
Performs any necessary copying and filing.
Prepares patient information for transfer through continuum of care.
Assists patients to access patient portal.
Completes stocking which may include nurse servers, unit alcoves and linen closets, including checking for expired items. Assists in maintaining environment such as equipment and charting alcoves, work stations, and conference rooms. Keeps work and visitor areas clean and well-organized. Submits work orders for repairs as needed. Completes staffing and scheduling administrative functions as delegated by unit leadership . Coordinates maintenance and repair of unit equipment such as:

Patient care equipment (thermometers, scales, beds, tables)
General use equipment such as ice machine, microwave, etc.
Computers, printers and other technology
Orders and maintains routine forms, and patient care supplies. Arranges for transport of documents, specimens or equipment to appropriate destination. Locates equipment, medical records or other items required to provide patient care. Assists in the orientation of health care team members and volunteers to clerical operations of the unit. Answers patient call lights upon request and relays request to patient care staff member. Flexible with assignment based on patient care requirements as well as unit needs. May function as a companion for non-restrained patients. Completes other additional duties as assigned: i.e. Emergin, Nash data entry and Teletracking. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of co-workers, patients, and families. Initiates work orders electronically, takes action, and follows-up. Reports all preventable hazards and unsafe practices including near misses and actual errors either to management or using the VOICE system. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, employees, and visitors to Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places. Follows all HIPAA policies and procedures. Follows up with the appropriate departments and individuals as necessary to problem solve or obtain information. Completes all mandatory education requirements. Identifies own learning needs and attends classes or in-services when available.

Education and Licensure

Education: Requires high school diploma or equivalent

Required Skills and Abilities:
Experience: Three to six months previous related experience

Preferred customer service, retail, clerical experience

Skills:
Demonstrates ability to: read, write and learn computer functions for EMR (Electronic Medical Record).
Basic computer proficiency in word processing.
Perform basic arithmetic calculations in order to calculate total patient census, order supplies and assemble charts.
Gather and exchange information and meet needs of patients, visitors, and various health system employees in a courteous manner. Use effective interpersonal skills to remain calm and friendly in a stressful environment.
Apply analytical skills necessary in order to gather and interpret routine data, maintain semi-complex records, prioritize and organize work.
Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
