As a Mechanical Designer at Coperion, you’ll be responsible for design, detail drafting and documentation on new products and client specialty projects large and small, developing design specifications and work instructions for the material requirements planning system. We’ll rely on you to generate new designs from concept, taking into consideration manufacturability and effective cost. You’ll also collaborate with vendors and team members across the organization to resolve problems and implement product enhancements so that we can provide our customers the ideal process solutions.

Other duties include:
  • Performing cost analysis for new or existing design
  • Ensuring availability of proposed components for a design
  • Selecting raw material, calculating weight and volume
  • Performing other calculations such as center of gravity, bend and stress moments
  • Ensuring mechanical fit of all components in a given assembly
  • Making estimates for incoming project
  • Preparing project related reports
  • Performing electrical tasks when necessary

Job Requirements:
  • Associates degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or equivalent (Bachelor’s Degree preferred)
  • 5 years’ Mechanical Design experience
  • AutoCAD and Inventor/Solidworks proficient
  • Ability to perform static and dynamic loads, strength of materials calculations
  • Knowledge of metal and non-ferrous materials and their properties
  • Familiarity with manufacturing practices
  • Knowledge of U.S. Customary system (inches) and SI system (Metric), various ANSI and ISO Engineering and drafting standards
  • Understanding of ISO 9001 standards; detailed knowledge of chapters Design control, Document control, and Non-conforming product
  • Proficiency in Windows, Microsoft products, Microstation, Solidworks, QAD, and SAP
  • Some travel to vendor and customer sites required
  • Familiarity with German, French or Spanish language a plus

Brief Description:

Must be able to generate new designs from concept, taking into consideration manufacturability and effective cost. Must be able to support standard product and special customer project work. Responsible for producing manufacturing and documentation information for release into Coperion MAPICS system.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

· Ability to perform static and dynamic loads, strength of materials calculations.
  • Create new designs
  • Perform cost analysis for new or existing design
  • Ensure availability of proposed components for a design
  • Create/revise drawings - Solidworks or hand-from markups, layouts or verbal instruction
  • Create layouts from concept, in a fashion to enable drafts person to generate detail drawings
  • Select raw material, calculate weight and volume
  • Perform other calculations, i.e. center of gravity, bend and stress moments
  • Ensure mechanical fit of all components in a given assembly
  • Coordinate proper creation of Item type (make Vs purchase), manufacturability and bill of material
  • Prepare project related reports
  • Self-check completed assignments and cross-check co-workers completed assignments
  • Perform electrical tasks when necessary
  • Make estimates for incoming project
  • Maintain computer software hierarchy
  • Coordinate activities for him/her self and drafts person sharing same assignment, produce quality work and meet time schedule
  • Work with manufacturing personnel to ensure manufacturability and to resolve fabrication and assembly difficulties
  • Work with purchasing personnel and vendors on improvements with purchased components
  • Work with project and product engineering personnel
  • Respond to ECOs (Engineering Change Orders) or equivalent for product corrections and improvements
  • Maintain confidentiality of all required information
  • Some travel to vendor and customer sites required
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and/or Experience:
  • Associates degree in Mechanical EngineeringTechnology or equivalent (Bachelor’s Degree preferred)
  • Trained in AutoCAD and Inventor/Solidworks
  • Familiarity with German, French or Spanish language a plus
  • 5 years as Designer

  • Knowledge of inspection tools, i.e. dial caliber, tape measure
  • Knowledge of mechanical and electronic tools used in assembly/disassembly and test of the equipment
