The Systems Administrator IV will have primary responsibility for supporting the Research Labs (RL) out of Fort Meade, Maryland as well as other locations with similar architecture/footprint. The Systems Administrator IV will support research and development environments which comprise of cutting edge technology containing both physical and virtual lab environments, and supporting Research Focus Areas and Support Teams. The RLs contain both desktop and server-side IT resources (hardware, software, cloud) along with physical space for hands on work and collaboration. Their physical spaces are designed with the necessary flexibility to support experimentation, technology demonstration and evaluation, and customer exercises.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position)

  • Supports requirements for managing installation, configuration and maintenance of current/future configurations for hardware/software of all RL computing environment(s).
  • RL computing consists of all or most of the following:
  • CRAY - High Performance Computing
  • Data Center, Desktop, Virtual, and Cloud
  • Storage Environments
  • Audio/Video Environments
  • Provisioning and maintainance of Amazon Web Services (AWS) Virtual Private Clouds across multi-security classification level, multi-platform, and multi-domain environments.
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
  • Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.
  • Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary.
  • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies.
  • Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure / add new services as necessary.
  • Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures.
  • Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.
  • Must have 10+ years of experience administration along with the ability to navigate through the trouble reporting and tracking system known as REMEDY.
  • Resolve a wide range of system issues, troubleshooting software, hardware, diagnosis of network issues, and addressing trouble tickets and service tasks across all tiered levels.
  • Must be able to learn, understand, and apply new technologies.
  • Able to conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities is required.
  • Conduct routine and emergency maintenance of all data center equipment
  • Communicate/coordinate scheduled preventive maintenance windows with potentially impacted customers
  • Collaborate and contribute to the development, administration, and testing of backup and recovery plans
  • Must possess strong problem solving and fault isolation skill sets
  • Interpret and discuss information which involves terminology or concepts not familiar to many.
  • Provide advice and recommend actions involving complex issues
  • Participate in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation
  • Ensure systems are secure to security guidelines by utilizing tools such as Retina and HBSS
  • Maintain operational, configuration, and other standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Verify system availability with existing Enterprise tools

Minimum Qualifications: (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.)

  • Associates’s Degree required
  • Security +
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience required.
  • Experience in the imagery intelligence domain.
  • Experience with UNIX and Windows system administration.
  • TS/SCI required; with ability to pass CI polygraph within 6-9months hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Customer’s processes and procedures and of the Customer’s production systems.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Ability to function as a team member and independently.
  • Ability to travel 0-10% to local area sites, overseas area of responsibility (AOR) locations, as well as other locations with similar architecture/footprint.
  • Ability to lift or move various pieces of computer equipment, (max 40 pounds).
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • General knowledge of database administration, network administration and possess network configuration management skills.

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

Work Environment:

  • The employee will normally work in a temperature-controlled office environment, with frequent exposure to electronic office equipment.
  • During visits to areas of operations, may be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather conditions. Is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.
