The Bridge Golf Foundation, a sports-based youth development program in Harlem organized around the game of golf, is looking for a Program Director.
This is a full-time, hands-on management position as part of small, dedicated group of individuals. It represents a significant opportunity to make a tangible impact on the lives of underserved young men beginning in early high school, through their college years and beyond, as well as to develop as a manager in a dynamic, growing, well-funded nonprofit.
The program currently has 30 young men grades 9-12 from Harlem high schools who attend 3 hours daily after school. There is also an intensive six-week summer program. (For a fuller description of what we do, please see the attached summary we provide prospective families.) We are moving in January to new, larger facilities on W 116 Street and expect to increase enrollment to between 40 and 50 young men by the end of 2020.
The ideal Program Director will be a current or former teacher from the New York City Public School system or have equivalent teaching or youth development experience. They will be someone looking to make an impact on the lives of our cohort over a period of years through virtually daily contact with the young men, and regular contact with their families, their mentors, and their schools. The PD will be expected to tutor alongside the rotation of paid tutors we employ, a mix of Columbia undergrads and Blue Engine BETA’s.

Current staffing and operations:
- Track and manage, enrollment, attendance, and the academic engagement of our young men, as well as manage the day-to-day affairs of the Foundation (logistics, nutrition, transportation, master calendar).
- Assist the Executive Directors in recruiting and managing the tutoring staff, curriculum design and implementation, liaison with our outside partners for standardized test prep and college guidance, and relations with feeder schools.
- Liaise in real time with parents regarding attendance, behavior, etc.
- Recruit, orient, and maintain contact with our mentors.
- Manage the six-week summer program.
- Implement and track the Foundation’s operating budget of approximately $1 million annually.
- Manage our social media feeds, which includes a monthly newsletter.
- Develop and maintain databases that will allow us to monitor and analyze what we do.
- Be present at the Foundation and engaged with the young men while program is in session between 4 and 7 p.m. on weekdays, and on the premises generally from midday until the end of program. On days there is no program the PD is expected to devote their time to the longer term planning and administrative aspects of the BGF enterprise. This is a full time year round position (with appropriate vacation time provided for).
BGF is currently run by its two Executive Directors, Bob Rubin and Stéphane Samuel, who are also its founders. The PD will report directly to them. Bob deals principally with fundraising, finance and long term planning, while Stéphane is in charge of academics. She currently oversees 5 paid part-time tutors, as well as tutors herself. She also manages our relationships with our partners Options Institute (college guidance) and A-List (standardized test prep), as well as our feeder schools and their relevant staff.
Additionally, Mike Sweeney is Director of Athletics. Mike manages a group of 3 additional golf instructor/coaches. He is assisted by Meghan Costello, who also provides administrative assistance to the overall operation.
BGF has partnered with Options Institute to provide college counseling for our seniors, and with A List for intensive standardized test prep which we start in the summer prior to 11thgrade.
The PD position will carry a salary commensurate with the applicant’s experience. For a DOE teacher, the salary would represent a significant raise given the greater responsibilities of the position relative to a teaching position. We will pay what we need to in order to secure the services of the right person. We will provide a stipend on top of salary which will be sufficient on an after tax basis to cover the purchase of health insurance under Obamacare.
While we are looking for someone who can start as early as January, we will consider candidates who are not available until June due to contractual academic or other commitments.

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO
The Bridge Golf Foundation (BGF) operates an intensive, year-round, multi-year program for Eagle Academy students, centered around the game of golf. Our goal is to improve college readiness and then to help our young men through college and into the workplace. Golf is the sports cornerstone of our rigorous academic and character education program. We believe that getting a young man through college - not simply to-college is our mission. We are making a long-term deep dive into the lives of a select group of young men.
During the school year, students from 9th through 12th attend 3-hour sessions after school five days a week at our facility, which contains state-of-the-art indoor golf instruction facilities, classrooms, and one-on-one tutoring spaces. In addition to a dedicated academic tutoring and character education staff which assists in small groups and one-on-one as necessary, BGF provides standardized test prep using recognized outside entities with proven results. Supplementing Eagle's college counseling function, BGF will advise the student and his family on and assist in college and post-secondary selection, help organize the application process, and assist in preparing the complex financial component of the college application, as well as the college essay for the common app. Our professional staff consists of 5 academic tutors and 5 golf professionals, resulting in extraordinarily individualized attention and a teacher: student ratio of less than 3:1 in both golf and academics. We interface with our young men’s teachers at Eagle to maximize the effectiveness of our tutoring.
Our intensive six-week summer program consists of all-day excursions to area golf courses, where practice is supplemented by daily academic tutoring. Additionally, juniors and select sophomores will each spend two weeks at The Bridge in Long Island - for a paid internship/residency that involves hands-on training in the golf industry, as well as benefiting from the cultural opportunities of Eastern Long Island. The Bridge is one of Long Island’s premier private golf clubs, built and operated for the last twenty years by the founders and co-Executive Directors of BGF.
Each young man is also assigned a mentor with whom he meets regularly outside the program, and who complements the work of the tutors and golf instructors. After our young men enter college, we will continue to mentor and support them.
BGF started and operates the Percy Sutton High School Golf Team (now in its third season), Harlem's only such boys’ team, which competes in the Public School Athletic League. We take the young men regularly to area golf courses in season, and they receive indoor instruction every day at our facility out of season. Under the tutelage of our PGA-accredited golf staff, our young men are given the opportunity to become skilled golfers by the time they are college bound. Golf is the platform on which we build readiness for college, the workplace, and life.
WHAT WE EXPECT FROM OUR YOUNG MEN AND THEIR FAMILIES
From you, the parents, we expect reinforcement of those rules, and your participation in the college process, by giving us the information we need in a timely manner to prepare your son's application and related financial forms, and providing us authorized access to Eagle Academy records, as per the Release that is a part of this Application. We expect you, the parents to participate in regular conferences with us about your son's progress. Finally, BGF requires a certain exclusivity of commitment. We will allow, on a case-by-case basis, for participation in other after school programs to the extent that BGF, Eagle Academy, and you agree they will be additive your son's development. However, you must consider BGF to be a full-time commitment that makes other after school activities difficult to envisage. We cannot deliver results if your son is not present, every day, year after year. If you give us this level of commitment, we will do our utmost to make a meaningful difference in his secondary education and beyond.
BGF is, first and foremost, a mutual commitment. We are committing significant financial and human resources to your son, and we expect a commitment from him and you in return. He needs to attend regularly, be engaged, know and follow the rules relating to dress, behavior, nutrition, excused and unexcused absences, and the like. He will be provided a uniform which he will be expected to be wearing at arrival, along with appropriate sports shoes. He will not be permitted to bring in any outside food (we provide a healthy snack for our young men). Electronic devices need to be surrendered upon arrival, until departure. Most important, unexcused absences are not acceptable.
