The Environmental Specialist I provides the support necessary to ensure that generating facilities and company operations are in compliance with federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations in addition to corporate environmental policies and procedures. Knowledge may be required in the areas of air, water, waste and/or hazardous materials. Works under close supervision. Performs tasks that are usually from detailed instructions and established procedures. Work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment for following defined policies and procedures. Maintains current knowledge on environmental laws and regulations and a working knowledge of technical aspects of regulatory requirements.

More specifically, this position provides data transfer, quality assurance, and reporting support for Continuous Emissions Monitoring systems (CEMS) for Duke Energy's Midwest fleet. This position minimizes regulatory compliance risk by analyzing, validating, and reporting CEMS emissions data. Key responsibilities include emissions data quality assurance and reporting, ensuring the reliable flow of data signals to/from the CEMS Data Acquisition and Handling System (DAHS), programming the DAHS to meet regulatory standards as well as supporting Duke operations, stack testing oversight, and resolving associated regulatory concerns.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Serves as subject matter expert for basic technical program and compliance issues and supports company’s environmental goals, strategies, programs and processes. With assistance develops and maintains procedures and programs to assist facilities in complying with environmental laws and regulations. Works with others to ensure that Duke Energy work procedures address compliance guidance. Assists with tracking regulatory changes, legislative activities and industry standards. Under direction works with federal, state and local regulatory authorities to interpret regulations and laws. Supports Duke Energy participation on various internal/external industry committees and teams
Provide basic regulatory-required and internal environmental reports. Assists with assigned environmental training programs
Participates in preparation, submittal and negotiation of permits and permit renewals with federal, state and local authorities. Assists with communication of permit requirements to facilities. Work with EHS Professionals and facility personnel to update various facility plans and documents that require knowledge and experience while minimizing impacts to operational activities
Works with others to support accomplishment of work unit goals and enhance company reputation through effective planning, organizing, communicating and scheduling of environmental work activities. Works with others to support the department’s routine and special projects in order to accomplish business objectives
Strives to continually develop and improve job-related, technical knowledge and skill to ensure that department expectations are met
Basic/Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science or other related field of study and up to three years’ experience or four years’ directly related work experience in lieu of the degree

Desired Qualifications:
Knowledge of power generation processes
Ability to manage multiple priorities and successfully complete each of them within specified timeframes
Has worked with others from diverse groups working toward a common goal or objective.
Working toward certification(s) as an environmental professional (QEP, CHMM, PMP, etc.) or Registration (PE)
Understands systems and processes that comply with environmental laws and regulations, permit conditions, corporate policies, goals, and targets
Has concept knowledge of environmental regulatory compliance requirements, scientific practices, quality assurance principles and auditing principles. Understands the technical skills in air, water or waste discipline areas
Very good communication (both oral and written) and interpersonal skills with a customer-oriented focus
