NIDCR is the federal government's lead agency for scientific research on dental, oral, and craniofacial health and disease. The Functional Genomics Section applies techniques in molecular and cellular biology to understand the mechanisms of pain signaling, particularly how this process can become maladaptive to produce pain hypersensitivity over a chronic time period.
Responsible for developing and implementing projects associated with the goals of the FGS, including input into the experimental design of the lab research, collecting and organizing the data, and publishing or presenting the work.
Provides guidance in preparing manuscripts to promote lab research.
Mentors post-bac?s and summer students in their experiments.
Prepares presentations to update collaborators on experimental progress. Interacts with collaborators on a regular basis to discuss future plans and assays needed for eventual publication.
Maintains high proficiency and expertise in the field of research. Authors and co-authors research in recognized peer reviewed journals.
Maintain mouse colonies of genetically engineered mice. Efficiency in animal care handling. Prepare animal study protocols and amendments
Grow and maintain cultured cell lines relevant to lab studies.
Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position.

In order to qualify for a Biologist, you must have completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university;
OR have a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND have appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.
In addition to meeting the Occupational Requirement, for a Biologist, GS-0401-13, you must meet the following: you must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: independently developing, planning, and implementing research; developing new methods for collecting, studying, assembling, or analyzing factual data; conducting comprehensive investigations; developing and preparing scientific reports, analytical interpretations, conclusions, or recommendations, typically for publication; using a variety of laboratory instruments to perform experiments; developing new protocols and procedures to use in conducting studies.
