MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine provides specialized treatment for chronic or non-healing wounds, which are defined as sores or wounds that have not significantly improved from conventional treatments. In addition to wound healing services, our team can provide medical and surgical care to concerns involving prior surgery or amputations, extremity pain, general podiatric foot and ankle problems, and difficulty with infections. Our team consists of world-recognized leaders in the field of diabetic limb salvage and functional reconstruction for the foot, leg and body. We have a team approach that consists of Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Podiatry, Orthopedic Surgery, Infectious Disease, Hyperbaric Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Rheumatology to handle many different complex problems.
The Center for Wound Healing has a clinical team of nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and medical assistants who work together to ensure that all needs of each patient are met. They coordinate and assist with testing and procedures that may be needed to determine the cause of a patient’s wound. The clinical team then assists the physicians to develop a treatment plan with each patient, to ensure they have the best possibility of healing, while improving their function and quality of life. As a surgical practice, the clinical team assists the physicians with surgical coordination, pre-op, and post-operative care of patients. They arrange referrals and communicate with other services that may be involved with the patient’s care. A major role of the clinical team is to provide patient and family education related to their wound care. They teach patients and caregivers how to care for the wounds, monitor for signs of infection, follow weight-bearing restrictions, and reinforce the importance of proper nutrition and diabetes management.
As part of our compensation package, our full time nurses in the Wound Center are eligible for outstanding educational opportunities including up to $6,000 of tuition assistance annually.
