To provide advanced technical support and assistance in the performance of laboratory, clinical and surgical procedures, directly relating to the care and use of experimental animals. Triage and treat animals at the ARC. Provide anesthesia support to researchers.
Routine health checks; observation of animals for signs of disease or illness and reports conditions to the supervisor. Maintain medical records. Follows all established guidelines while maintaining records. Administers drugs and medication under qualified supervision, preparation of special animal diets, restraining of animals, operation of basic research equipment and breeding colonies. Weekend duties will include serving as contact person for ARC management team. Provide hands on training for new employees and researchers under the supervision of the Training and Compliance Manager. Prepares animals for surgery. Administers anesthetics under supervision. Monitors postoperative animals. Provide advance technical support for researchers and veterinary staff. Cleans and maintains surgical suites. Conducts inventories of supplies. Sterilize instruments for surgical procedures. Responsible for maintaining controlled substance and record keeping for Veterinary group. Maintain regulatory documentation. Assists with sentinel animal program, including necropsies.
Required to be available during work hours via cell phone. Other related functions as assigned.
Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.
High School graduation or GED. Experience in a laboratory animal facility or veterinarian clinic. Knowledge of animal care standards. Experience in animal anesthesia. Demonstrated ability to maintain medical records. Detail oriented; demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of accuracy and ability to multi-task. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Certification through American Association for Laboratory Animal Science OR Registered Veterinarian Technician (RVT)license. Experience as a Veterinarian Technician or Health Technologist. Experience with exotic species handling, dosing and anesthesia

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
