The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is a dynamic ambassador of the organization who works closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, staff and volunteers to expand funding for the organization.
The CDO will be an inspirational leader with the skill, vision and drive to take this successful organization to the next level in major donor development, strategic grant partnerships, volunteer and event management and the artisan sales program. Keen knowledge of Friendship Bridge’s numerous programs and internal processes in Guatemala and the organization’s cultural context are essential to securing major gifts and grants in order to grow and enhance the programs. In addition, the CDO needs to have a passion for, and speak knowledgably about, Friendship Bridge’s theory of change for social impact and its commitment to a double bottom line, achieving financial and social returns, in order to cultivate and attract new support as the organization expands. The CDO will lead the strategic planning, budgeting and forecasting for the department.
This leader will also provide strategic guidance and skills development to the Artisan Program Manager for Handmade by Friendship Bridge, the retail/wholesale handmade artisan program where experienced artisan clients in Guatemala expand their skills and businesses to provide quality exportable products through retail and wholesale channels including Friendship Bridge’s website. Providing leadership to this revenue-generating program requires a business-savvy professional who is able to prioritize financial and social goals through artisan trainings and sales, as well as support the growth of international retail and wholesale opportunities in partnership with the Artisan Program Manager.
This position will require creativity and ingenuity as the organization heads into the next five-year strategic plan which requires: growing major gifts; reinvigorating events, crowdfunding campaigns, and fundraising appeals; relationship building with large multi-national foundations, grantors and corporate funders; increased activities for volunteer expansion and retention; and securing speaking engagements and press opportunities for increased exposure.
The CDO is a full-time position, a member of the leadership team, and requires occasional travel domestically and internationally and evening events. The CDO will oversee four main functions:
Individual Giving, Volunteers and Events Management.
US Marketing and External Communications to Local and International Audiences.
Grant Development and Management.
Handmade by Friendship Bridge Artisan Program.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
Increasing revenue related to fundraising and artisan product sales in line with the organization’s 2020-2024 Strategic Initiatives and annual budget.
In coordination with the Director of Donor Engagement, create the annual Fundraising Operating Plan that includes US marketing and social media strategies.
Lead the marketing vision and donor journey of fundraising and artisan program activities. Work with marketing team to execute this vision.
In coordination with the Director of Donor Engagement, build deep and sustained relationships with both current and new major donors at the $5k+ level.
In partnership with the Grant Coordinator, build and create new relationships with foundations/corporations who provide a min of $25k in grant funding. Coordinate closely with Program staff in Guatemala to successfully secure renewal and new grant opportunities.
Identify new demographic for volunteer expansion in coordination with the Director of Donor Engagement.
Manage and supervise the staff for fundraising, US marketing and artisan program.
Attend board meetings as requested by President and CEO and serve as a member of the board Development Committee.
Oversee team’s monthly revenue forecasts, reports, and analysis
Champion the ongoing focus on, and training and guidance in, fundraising activities to Board and staff

Building a major donor portfolio.
Marketing to US audiences to achieve revenue goals.
Leading a team of professionals.
Proven experience and knowledge of fundraising principles for securing new major donors, growing major donors and working with Board members to maximize fundraising opportunities.
Results-driven, organized with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously within budget and deadlines.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Strong management skills and ability to mentor, train and coach a team as well as volunteers.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work with a high level of energy and can-do attitude.
Spanish language skills preferred.
Tech skills to support the management of staff and volunteers throughout the world.
