General description: The Aquatic Ecologist’s primary responsibility is to assist in processing samples for PhycoTech’s semi-automated algal identification services, including identifying algae from images, in addition to assisting the main laboratory. The person applying for this position must possess excellent computer and organizational skills and be a “team-player” able to troubleshoot issues and pay great attention to detail. Experience identifying algae is required. Programming/coding experience (Matlab, Python, or R) is preferred but not required. This position is 90% Laboratory and 10% field work. The successful candidate must be able to complete projects by assisting project team and attending and participating in group and project meetings. A bachelor's or master's degree, and prior work experience in biology or chemistry is preferred,

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Computer work – MatLab, Python, proprietary data management software, MS Office products
  • Sample processing
  • Receive samples and log-in to database
  • Capture algal images using imaging flow cytobot (IFCB)
  • Identify algae in images
  • Export data reports and send to customers * Communicate with customers as needed
  • Organization of the laboratory
  • Filing customer paperwork
  • Glassware cleaning (Beakers, Test Tubes, etc.)
  • Miscellaneous cleaning duties to maintain a clean and safe work environment * Assisting the laboratory manager in processing and mounting samples in the laboratory
  • Participation in K-12 educational outreach programs (occasionally outside business hours)
  • Minor field work
  • Any and all miscellaneous related functions as deemed necessary
  • Shipping and receiving
  • Receiving customer samples (logging into database)
  • Shipping customer samples/data
  • Computer work – using proprietary LIMS software along with MS Office products and standard statistical software to generate customer data, complete reports and scientific papers
  • Sample preparation – acid use required for some samples
  • Data entry/proofing
  • Document sample information by updating laboratory information system daily.

  • Mounting, Cleaning, Organizing, Storing
  • Organization in the laboratory

  • Keep laboratory supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders, and verifying receipt
  • Misc cleaning duties
  • Resolve problems by examining and evaluating data; selecting corrective steps.
  • Keep equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance;
  • Minor field work
  • Mandatory Drug Test and Background check (we enter federal facilities)

The successful applicant must also completely follow any, and all, laboratory and safety procedures in accordance with written and verbal protocols, in order to ensure the safety of all PhycoTech employees and customers. In addition, any person working in PhycoTech’s facilities and having knowledge of PhycoTech’s proprietary information is required to sign a “Non-Disclosure Agreement” before performing any job duties.


  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, Bachelor’s degree and extensive work experience minimum
  • Algal identification experience required
  • Programming/coding experience (Matlab, Python, or R) preferred
  • MS Word / Excel proficiency is required, MS Access and PowerPoint proficiencies a plus

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $40,000.00 to $50,000.00 /year
