Assistant Controller

Bethany College is looking for a professional leader for its Assistant Controller Position. The Assistant Controller will be an integral member of the Finance Department who will have supervisory responsibility over staff and functions. This position reports directly to the Vice President of Operations. This individual will assist in preparation of quarterly and year-end financial statements and will assure that the financial records of the college are maintained accurately and timely. The Assistant Controller will be a primary contact for the College’s external audit. This person will also be responsible for reconciling gifts with Institutional Advancement as well as performing grant accounting.

Detailed Description of Duties:

  • Oversee monthly general ledger closing including reviewing all account reconciliations and journal entries
  • Assist in preparing quarterly and year-end financial statements, including a “Management’s Discussion and Analysis” of the current period compared to the prior period
  • Investment accounting, including reconciliation of statements, donations and monthly journal entries
  • Oversee grants accounting and assists in the set-up of new grants
  • Oversee annual preparation of 1099 Misc., 1099R, and 1098T forms
  • Assist outside auditors with information for annual returns
  • Acts as liaison for external audit firm; prepares audit work papers; reviews and inputs audit journal entries; prepares year-end financial statements for the audit
  • Reconcile selected general ledger accounts each month-end
  • Monitors collection of accounts receivables including aging and benchmarking
  • Appreciation and enthusiasm for the unique mission, tradition and culture of Bethany

Preferred/Desirable Knowledge:

Bachelor's degree in related field: accounting, finance, business, etc;

Experience with Ellucian/Colleague data system or like data system

Work experience in higher education or academia
