Who we are?
Ethical Culture Fieldston School is a progressive PreK-12 independent school that has been serving students from throughout New York City and the surrounding suburbs since 1878. ECFS offers a rich curriculum in the arts, sciences, and humanities. A co-ed, nonsectarian school, it serves a diverse community of about 1,700 students on two campuses - one in the Riverdale section of the Bronx and the other in Manhattan. Ethical Culture School, located on the Upper West Side at 63rd Street and Central Park West, is comprised of approximately 450 students Pre-K through 5th Grade and 80 faculty members.

The Literacy Specialist is a member of the Learning Team, which supports the work of the classroom teachers by helping students who experience difficulties in literacy and executive functioning skills.
The 1st/2nd grade Literacy specialist works with small groups of students who have been identified as having difficulties with decoding. They remediate skills in a small group setting. They function as a resource to classroom and specialist teachers by providing consultation about students, materials, and teaching strategies. They contribute to curriculum development and modifications with a focus on student supports. They also perform both formal and informal assessments in order to monitor student progress and inform individual educational goals.
The Literacy Specialist attends team, grade level, and administrative meetings to discuss student issues and progress. They participate in meetings with the parents of their students and facilitate coordination between the school, family and outside service providers.
- This position is a three-month leave replacement starting September 2021 to December 2021. .
Master’s degree in Reading, Special Education or related field preferred
A minimum of three years experience with reading instruction/remediation
Formal training in and experience using the Wilson Reading System and Wilson Fundations
Experience with learning differences and differentiated curriculum
Candidates should be well versed in progressive pedagogical approaches and comfortable working in collaborative environments with a faculty of varied experience levels. Candidates should also have a commitment to the ten tenets of our mission: progressive and multicultural education, academic excellence, ethical learning and diversity. A passion for working with lower school students, a creative and dynamic approach to curriculum development, exemplary ‘people skills’ and a sense of humor are essential.
