Thomas Nelson Community College is located on the Virginia Peninsula in the heart of Hampton Roads, a region renowned for being the birthplace of America and home to communities rich in culture and industry. Thomas Nelson is a comprehensive community college, offering a variety of programs of study leading to an associate’s degree, certificate, or career studies certificate. In addition to the many popular transfer degree programs, the college is known for its strong career & technical programs and its outreach to the community as a partner and leader in workforce development.
Founded in 1967, Thomas Nelson serves over 11,500 students, of diverse backgrounds each year. Faculty and staff are strategic and responsive, committed to understanding and meeting the needs of the region.
The college has two campuses, one in Hampton and the Historic Triangle Campus located in Williamsburg. The college also has a satellite site at the Southeast Higher Education Center in Newport News. The communities served by the college are the Cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the Counties of James City and York.
The Director of Financial Aid and Veteran Services plays an important role in the student enrollment, retention and completion efforts of the College. The position supports the College’s mission of changing lives and empowering students to succeed.
Major responsibilities include:
Responsible for planning and organizing Financial Aid and Veteran Services to ensure a student-focused approach in the administration of federal, state and institutional financial aid funds and services.
Directs, plans, organizes, and provides leadership to the day to day operations of Financial Aid and Veteran Services.
Oversees the awarding, disbursement and reconciliation of federal, state and institutional financial aid and timely processing of veterans benefits.
Serves on College Governance Committees, management groups and participates in Financial Aid and Veteran Services organizations.
Completes required federal, state and institutional reports.
Reviews requests and appeals from students.
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
Master’s degree in business management, human relations, public administration, educational administration, student personnel or related field.
Extensive experience using integrated higher education student information systems.
Experience in financial aid reporting (i.e.; FISAP, PPA, state reports).
Extensive/progressive financial aid/veteran services experience.
Considerable supervisory experience.
Broad knowledge of federal and state financial aid regulations and record-keeping requirements.
Knowledge of supervision and personnel practices, training methodologies and communication techniques.
Budget management and administration knowledge.
Knowledge of good business practices for financial aid and veteran services.
Knowledge of Veteran Services policies and certification processes.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Financial management and strong analytical skills.
Possess presentation skills.
Strong customer service skills.
Demonstrated leadership ability for team oriented environment.
Establish positive public relations and interact effectively with diverse levels of students and internal and external customers.
Strategically analyze financial aid data.
Write effective and accurate reports.
Form strong coalitions with internal and external constituencies.
Maintain confidential and sensitive information.
Resolve problems and to develop relevant alternatives and recommendations.
Manage multiple tasks, be organized and detail oriented.
Work independently and as a part of a project team to meet deadlines.
Train staff and campus colleagues about financial aid and veteran services programs and policies.
Operational experience with PeopleSoft .
Previous experience working at a community college financial aid office.
Hours of duty: Will vary, some evenings and weekend may be required.
