The State Pre-College Enrichment Program (S-PREP) is a free high school and college preparation program for 7th -12th grade students who reside in New York City and are interested in pursuing a career in medicine or related STEM fields. The long range objective of the program is to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in healthcare and STEM professions. The program offers enrichment courses geared towards preparing students for success in math and science. The program also offers career development workshops, college counseling services, field trips and college tours.
2019 SUMMER PROGRAM DATES: June 28th – July 26th
SPREP Preceptors will lead math and science courses for middle and high school students. Participating students come from diverse backgrounds and generally have varying skillsets. Ideal candidates for the SPREP Preceptor positions are those interested in working with students who fit the demographics previously described. This is a great opportunity to exercise curriculum construction, establish and execute course instruction, and differentiation skills. Course offerings will include, but may not be limited to Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Biology, Chemistry, Geometry and Pre-calculus. Class sessions will be held on Mondays through Fridays from 10:00am – 12:00pm. Preceptors will be paid at a rate of $32.14 per hour.
Preceptors report to the Program Administrators for the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Supporting the preparation of program sessions including classes, special events and other activities
Facilitating class sessions Monday – Thursday from 10:00am to 12:00pm with sessions occasionally being held on Friday mornings
Preparing a course description outlining the goals and objectives as well as prerequisites
Developing and executing a course curriculum which includes administration of a pre-test and a post-test as needed for student assessments
Submitting lesson plans and graded assignments for class sessions on a weekly basis
Conducting office hours in increments of at least one hour, twice per week
Providing feedback regarding students’ participation for program evaluations
Monitoring student attendance for respective course
Attending all special program events (orientation, closing ceremonies, class trips, etc.)
Providing recommendations for program improvements
Completing clerical duties as assigned
Bachelors degree or equivalency.
Applicants must be full time CUIMC students. Education and training in science and/or mathematics is required. Demonstration of leadership and organization skills is also required. Previous teaching experience is extremely helpful, but not necessary.
