Primarily Monday-Friday Day Shift; will be required to participate in on-call rotation.
The general surgeon is an individual who has specialized knowledge and skills relating to the diagnosis, preoperative, operative, and postoperative management in the following areas: alimentary track; abdomen and its contents; breasts; skin and soft tissue; head and neck (including trauma, vascular, congenital and oncologic disorders - particularly tumors of the thyroid, parathyroid); endocrine system; surgical oncology (including coordinated multimodality management of the patient by screening, surveillance, surgical adjunctive therapy; rehabilitation, and follow-up). The responsibility for all phases of care of the injured patient is an essential component of general surgery; as well as complete care of critically ill patients with underlying surgical conditions in emergency departments and intensive care units. Experience in Robotic Surgery of the abdominal contents and reconstruction of the abdominal wall using component separation are an asset.
Expected to perform the full range of general surgery procedures.
- Provide direct patient care in out-patient clinic, in-patient setting, operating room, and Emergency Department.
- Provide on-call services.
- Have assigned OR block time and scheduled clinic times.
The selectee may be required to work or travel between any of the locations within Corporate Orlando, including the new Lake Nona campus. The selectee may also be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis, based on patient care needs.

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completion of a residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019. This examination is administered by VA Occupational Health. This position requires: light to moderate lifting (15 - 44 lbs); light carrying (15 lbs and under); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (up to 2 hours); standing (up to 2 hours); kneeling (up to 1 hour); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted); emotional stability; mental stability; working closely with others; and working alone.
